I take 30 mg of Haldol at bedtime, which both makes me VERY sleepy and gives me insomnia.
After spending 18-19 hours in bed for the past few weeks in an attempt to get enough sleep, I had enough and started researching. Can’t take Valerian with Klonopin, but my pharmacist said melatonin does not interfere with my med cocktail. I started taking 3 mg last night.
Got nine hours of sleep total (laid awake for three hours between 3 and 6 a.m though). Did not take my usual nap today as i felt alert enough not to need one. That’s what I was hoping for, a defined sleep period and a defined waking period so I can stop spending most of my daytime hours in bed.
I am interested in hearing your experiences with melatonin - does it work well for you? What dosage do you take? I’m encouraged by the first day and am hoping it doesn’t just stop working.

I use melatonin about 3 or 4 times a week, 3mg dose although I’ve had success with 1mg dose too. It’s great for me, never seems to stop working. I also take Benadryl to help me sleep pretty much every night, and Trazadone if that doesn’t work. Quite a cocktail but most nights I’m snoring!

I use 1 mg a few times a week.
Even 1 mg is more than your body would produce on its own.

I’m so happy to see others have had good results! Last night was day two and I got a good quality ten hours of sleep. I’m really impressed.
3 mg happened to be the dose on the Nature Made bottle. I was wondering how that compared with other supplements. I think 3 mg is a good dose for me based on my experience thus far.
Thanks for the replies!

Melatonin made me sleep, but I got restless legs from it so, it wasn’t for me.

I take 3mg most nights. Sometimes, I need to take 6mg. My body does not produce melatonin on its own, due to a brain tumor I had as a child.

I was taking 1 mg or half of that. Not currently on it.

@Ninjastar I’ve been wondering if I produce melatonin on my own too. I got ten hours last night of 12 hours spent in bed and actually awoke feeling somewhat refreshed, something that I haven’t felt since my early teens. I NEVER feel refreshed in the morning. I’m ALWAYS tired during the day.
I may have stumbled across something significant? Hoping it continues to get better. I’ve laid down to nap the last two days but haven’t needed one. Hopefully I can lose the urge to nap as i rack up more good nights of sleep! Right now, I have quite a deficit of those.
edited to add: I just read online that schizophrenics are prone to low melatonin levels, possibly due to their medications. I take a whopping dose at 30 mg Haldol, so maybe I really do have a low melatonin level on my own. Just adding this in case anyone else finds it useful.
