I’m not currently homeless but it crosses my mind sometimes as a possibility in my future due to my struggles.
Where can a homeless person sleep in the winter?
It gets really cold here in the winter. I dont know if I would survive.

Homeless shelter.
Yeah i was wondering that too?
Maybe id have a duvet wrapped around me until i found a shelter
When I was homeless I had a car and I slept in it
Same here. I was homeless by choice once (I was paranoid in my apartment). I slept in my truck before being put in the hospital. It was cold and uncomfortable.
@WhiteRaven I was sleeping 30 minutes every 24 hours and Walmart was open 24/7 so I walked a lot
Praying you don’t fall.
I need to do similar preparations but I have support. It’s unlikely anything will happen but it’s good to prepare.
ive been homeless probably 5 or more times since childhood. always had a car tho so slept in that. its funny one of my set ups was a baby crib mattress in the back of a SUV on the folded down seats. best sleep ive ever gotten was that.
I wouldn’t reckon it would be good, i think it would be hell
get one of those hiking emergency blankets made of foil and put a sleeping bag over or under that
Why are you anticipating that you’ll be homeless?
Is everything ok on the home front?
I currently live with my 82 year old grandma, who is in bad health.
When she passes away theres a chance I could go live with my mom and her husband, according to my mom.
If her husband changes his mind and says no, I could be homeless.
I have a bad history of employment. Ive literally had 15 or so jobs in my life. They never workout.
You better get a job. There’s no alternative. Even when you’re homeless the shelter makes you get one. That’s how they get you off the street. Just get one before its too late.
you could get a swag, its kind of like a small rollup tent that you put blankets or a sleeping bag inside. i travelled with aus and shared a swag some of the time. it was still cold. but survived and slept in the day.
Maybe have a couple of plans in place in case you lose your housing. Start putting your name on waiting lists to get in group homes or supported housing. Do you have enough money for a studio or to share an apartment? Look into low income housing. Look into board & care homes or you can get some places that will only charge you a 1/3 of your income to live in. There are options out there.
Honestly @77nick77 i was on housing waiting lists in Toronto for almost ten years. This is the worst time ever to be homeless.
@TheCanuk, sometimes you can put your name on a waiting list and you may get the place in a year or it may take 5 years. If you put your name on a waiting list and it comes open in a year and you’re not ready to move then you can always say no. But you don’t know what you’ll be doing in 5 years; maybe in 5 years (not trying to be morbid) your grandmother dies and your stepdad won’t let you move in but one of the places you put your name on earlier might come up just at the right time. I did that.
At the suggestion of my therapist at the time, I put my name on a waiting list that they told me would take 5 years for my name to come up. Well, after four years I got to the top of the waiting list and I moved out of the room I was renting and moved into a beautiful studio apartment., I ended up staying there 5 years.
Yeah, that’s another option, renting rooms in peoples houses, I did that for 13 years. It’s ideal because living in someone’s house is like having a built in friend so you won’t get lonely. And if they let you have the run of the house it’s even better.
Yeah, I get that but you never know, your name could come up sooner. But you don’t know what you’ll be doing in ten years. It might be just what you need in ten years, you may really need it in ten years.
If you’re worried about being homeless I would start looking for housing and I would start by looking online. If Canada is anything like the U.S. you can fill out applications for housing online and also put your name on waitlists online.
I worked for a few years and bought a cheap house that i can live in on benefits. It might last ten years. maybe more who knows. I dont want to work either. It sucks working with mental illness. but the system is overburdened, rents are high and welfare is not going up.
