When receptionists attack

There used to be a reality show several years ago called “When Animals Attack”. Basically, it consisted of showing stupid people who have lions or bears or some other wild animal for pets and it showed what happens when these “tame” animals freak out and maul or bite or crush their owners. Or the show would show animals out in the wild like giraffes or antelope or other animals you wouldn’t normally associate with violence and it would show them killing predatory lions or hyenas by kicking them to death or goring them.

But I have a pert peeve about receptionists who work in doctors or dentists offices who offer medical advice. Maybe it only happens to me and the doctors I see. But I have been going to the same dentist since 1974. I had gaps where I didn’t see him for several years at at a time but I always came back. And some of his receptionists have been there since I first went.

But they have the most annoying (and potentially harmful) habit of giving medical advice to me (and I assume other patients too). Some of their advice is correct but some of their advice I know is flat out wrong. I try to be polite and try to not show my true feelings but I hate it. Its happened for years and it happened just last week. Some of their advice scares me because I know they give me the wrong information that the dentist himself later disproves of.

They are nice people but I think the problem is that they have been at their job for years and I think they feel a little like they want more responsibility. They make more money than I will ever make but I think their egos rise up and they want to show off their knowledge even though it it can be wrong. I have had other people at doctors offices do this too. So irritating.

Interesting! I tend to irritate the receptionists than them me. I got the glare of death by one at the pdoc because apparently I wasn’t being chipper enough when answering her endless questions.

I have to deal with a lot of medical receptionists in my job because I ask doctors a lot of questions. They usually try to block me and say the doctor has no time to write a report or they demand money over the phone.

I know what you mean about medical receptionists giving medical advice too. It’s happened to me before and I agree, it’s as though they want more responsibility but it’s just outright dangerous.

A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

I would tell the receptionists that you understand they’re trying to be helpful, but since they’re not dentists you’d appreciate it if they refrained from providing dental advice. Have a nice day.

I have some dental advice, rinse out your mouth with water after eating anything. I did this for a year and then visited the dentist and he was absolutely amazed at my gum health. He seemed to be happy that he finally found a person with very healthy gums.

I think that most health professionals get very discouraged at the sorry state of people and the fact that most people have absolutely no interest in taking care of themselves.
