Whats the different between you have schizophrenia or you have psychosis?

I asked my psychiatrist during the last visit…do I have schiziphrenia?I have been taking antipsychotic for 8 years and have previously have diagnosis of schizo. Now I asked the doctor once more as my girlfriend followed me to the appointment what is my diagnosis,I asked if it’s schizophrnia? He said,it’s psychosis but not schizophrenia…I know schizophrenia is a diagnosis and psychosis is a symptom of different type of mental health problem…I guess I’ll just stick with antipsychotic since my gf is accepting of me taking meds

Simplified: schizophrenia is one of several illnesses that cause psychotic symptoms. Psychosis can also be caused by trauma, drug abuse, etc.

Long: im not convinced there is such a clear line between the two or there is even a real singular disease called schizophrenia. I think a broad range of issues can lead to a broad range of experiences we call psychotic.

What doctors told me though, at first, was that they wouldnt diagnose me with schizophrenia because i had medfree periods when i was fine inbetween psychoses, and i had too little other symptoms: negative, cognitive. My presentation wasnt schizophrenic, they said.

I suspect that is ■■■■■■■■. But that is what they said. I havent really got a clue though…one doctor would say im sz, another not sz. So i dont think there is really agreement.

I think my situation is kind of similar to yours

I suspected that.

I myself am still clueless as to what i really have. I have concluded the doctors are just as clueless, maybe even more so, because they do not experience what i experience.

In the end, it doesnt really matter what label you get, as long as you get to know your symptoms, what helps and what hurts. That is always very personal. I am trying to teach myself to navigate my issues better. With fluctuating success.
