I do the same thing. Sometimes I’ll remember everything about a person except his or her name. It can get embarrassing.
My roommate has a similar issue. She completely forgets a good deal of what I tell her. It used to be frustrating, I would think, “are you listening to me?” But now it’s natural for me to repeat things as if I hadn’t said them before.
The plus side is that I know in advance which jokes will delight her. I can usually use the same one at least three times before it sticks with her 
All this to say, don’t worry about offending me by asking about something you think you should know. I absolutely understand.
