I lived in my auto in Miami and elsewhere in America from 2000 to 2002. The worst thing was little insects that wanted to live in my auto, cockroaches, flea, ants, mosquitoes and other insects. Other than that it was okay although it was always a challenge to find a secure place to park my car for each night. It was all so interesting. Taking showers on the beach of Key West and using my throw net to fish in the Keys. I mostly have good memories.
I actually ate fishes I caught with my throw net. I had a gas stove and I cooked these fishes after preparing them for cooking. Once I even served fishes to one Larry who rode his bicycle around Key West. Larry had been in some military operations in the jungles of Central America. It was all so interesting. Once I talked with one Professor of Economics from Wisconsin and he taught me about inverted yield curve.
You’re lucky to be alive if you lived in your car for 2 years!
The nice thing about being homeless with a car is that you can at least keep your few possessions secure and you can lock it at night to keep other homeless out. They’re you’re biggest threat to safety.
Having a secure parking location for each night was essential. I had my things in one locker of one self-storage in Miami and so I kept just a few items with me in my car and I had also a mailing address in Miami which was essential for getting all necessary mails. In many ways I just drove my car to different places and just slept in the car. I have many good memories.
I think that’s becoming an issue for people who live off-grid in their vans now. I understand there are phone apps you can use to find safe parking spots these days.
