So this is kinda hypothetical now but a few days my dad(schizoaffective, im bipolar so hes a lot more comfortable talking to me about his issues than other people now, we got a lot closer after my diagnosis)
Asked me to drive to his house (30 miles away but i was an hour) and take him to the hospital to be committed because he felt homicidal.
My state has the single worse mental health care in the US. It has I think 100 adult hospital beds not including psych wards in ERs. Shortage of many meds. For the most part, immediate voluntary commital is impossible, because they assume if you voluntarily commit you are not bad enough. This has previously caused my dad a lot of issues. Twice refused when he originally was having issues. Next time he was so bad, he tried to kill my mom, and a nurse asked why he wasnt commited a lot sooner. Basically, when my dad says he needs commited, I want to make sure that is the case. But i was drunk and high and could not drive. I told him to call 911, he said the PD refused to commit (this is despite him being known around town for being “crazy”)
All I could tell him was next time punch the cop, even jail is better than him killing someone. (Police brutality is not a big issue here, corruption mostly, so im not too worried about him being shot, but its still terrible thats the best advice I can give him)
I saw my dad today though offered to take him to another city if thats what it took to commit, he said the mania faded and he was better, especially after taking a long walk today.
Hopefully if it happens again taking him to a different city helps and they commit him
