What do you do to minimize symptoms other than take medication? For example what is the best way you have found to manage your voices and delusions?
Do you still have trouble with voices? What meds are you on?
I still hear voices and fight off delusions constantly. I’m currently on 160mg Geodon 75mg welbutrin and 300mg gabapentin (twice daily). They are a little quieter than they were when I was off my meds but still to intrusive for me to function at a normal level. My proc said if it was still happening we will change to something else at my next appointment at the end of the month. She mentioned Clozapine.
I also maintain a ketogenic gluten free diet and take a bunch of supplements including sarcosine, l-theanine and NAC. I want to start exercising but i havnt been able to get started yet.
Apparently aerobic exercise is great. I just don’t have the energy / motivation for it.
I try to minimize stress. I seems like when something starts to weigh heavy on my head if I take some time to just think it through logically and make a plan to handle all the “what about ifs” then I can reduce the stress some. If I keep the stress lower I have less noise in my head and less shenanigans in general.
@everhopeful I will go ahead and agree with you.
From my personal experience, my intrusive thoughts and condition are much worse when I am low fit
than when I am high fit.
I am currently fairly high fit, I exercise every day and I hope it stays that way.
Cut out nicotine, exercise more, read books, eat right, generally just focus on my health.
Stay busy. Even when what I did didn’t make too much sense, it kept me from getting too absorbed in my inner world.
I have no positive symptoms anymore. I only have a few negatives and some cognitives. But these are the things I do to stay well:
Play a musical instrument every day, or some other creative outlet
Do yoga poses every day, or some other form of exercise.
Pray daily
Get enough sleep every day
Nutritious food
Read books and magazines daily
Mindfulness meditation twice daily
Socialize daily
Volunteer
Engage in social media
Pet ownership, if possible
Learn all you can about schizophrenia.
Full weight behind reality.
Yes, I did that.
Socialize- I know it can be uncomfortable but make sure you interact with people on some level.
Reality/fact check - not always easy but can help ease your fears. for example ill hear voices telling me the stove is on and normally I’ll check it to make sure it’s off but if the voices continue after that I tell myself “you already checked it” “nobody has cooked since I checked last” “we arent smelling gas” and it can help fight it
Also asking people around you about your surroundings can help.
Grounding techniques - helps you “stay” in the physical world.
Mindfulness - can help manage reactions to stressors.
Stim toys - help with grounding and gives you something else to focus on.
Do things you enjoy- even if you don’t feel like it try to do something you like every few days.
Rest- make sure to sleep enough and it’s ok to take a day every once in a while to just do nothing
Music- helps drown out voices and helps distract.
Neutralize thoughts. My psychosis sensitivity has acquired a compulsive character. I perform certain actions to reduce anxiety. To prevent delusions.
I will definitely be trying to incorporate most if not all of these ideas into my own coping and recovery plans.
