What is the accepted etiquette regarding noise of walking on creaky floorboards at night?

Just got a message to say downstairs don’t like me walking around at night.

Firstly I say I can kinda get that. No one wants to be bothered by neighbours.

But I take such effort to accommodate them. I wear headphone 24/7 so no music of tv can be heard.

I quit smoking so that the smoke smell doesn’t intrude on their flat.

I take out their garbage.

Just seems like I am making way more accommodations than them

Does your building have a stated quiet hours policy? I would go by whatever that says.

The rule in the uk is the quiet hours are 11pm to 7am.

But there may be debate as to whether walking round a property constitutes as valid noise pollution

I would honor the no noise rule from 11 pm to 7 am.

During those hours I would only walk on my floors to get to and from the bathroom.

Outside those hours, you live there too. When you live in an apartment or attached condo you have to accept that your neighbors will make noise.

And why are you taking out their trash?!?!

It’s a guest house. The owner doesn’t live here so as a good will gesture I take out their trash

Looked up the law. Footsteps do count as noise pollution.

Fair enough

Early nights coming for this here cowboy!

IDK, maybe your walking around is like what my counselor is always telling me about my neighbors. When you live in an apartment you hear a lot of incidental noise, you can’t have perfect quiet in an apartment . It’s just expected that you are going to hear your neighbors, especially if you live in an older building where the building codes weren’t as strict and the walls are thinner.

I don’t know. Sometimes you have to move around at night. I would try to move as little as possible at night though, and if you know where their bedroom is located, avoid walking in that area.

The landlord should make a upgrade if this continues to be a problem.

just limit your trips around the flat…I would find out where their bedroom is and try to avoid that upper area around that room…makes sense right?

Tread carefully or tiptoe.

I think your neighbour is making too big a deal of this, but perhaps talk with your landlord about getting some new floorboards fitted.

Maybe walk around but wear thick socks or slippers. Maybe if you just like staying up late, just stick to the kitchen or the living room and sit and don’t move around a lot.

Thing is my landlord owns the guest house below too. A lot of work was done on my place. New floor and insulation but this guest still complained

Tbh though I am looking at this situation as an opportunity. I need to get on a healthier schedule so this might be the required notivation

I wonder if some throw rugs would work.:thinking::thinking:
