What if I was misdiagnosed?

I was wondering what if I don’t have schizophrenia instead I have schizotypal personality disorder?

What’s the different between them?

Thanks in advance!

I don’t think one is necessarily better than the other. Maybe one has a better prognosis but I’m not a psychiatrist so I couldn’t say.

Maybe bring this up with your pdoc at your next appointment.

Good luck.

I asked the same question for my psychiatrist. He said schizotypal personality disorder no longer exist, I don’t really understand

I wouldn’t worry about the diagnosis so much, as long as the meds are working.

Oh wow, I never knew that! Interesting.

Do you keep a journal of everything that happens, like voices you might hear or visual hallucinations as well as your delusions? That can really help in sessions with a pdoc.

Things will get better. Just commit to it by taking your meds everyday, and trying to have a positive outlook. Start small, take baby steps, but you will get there.

after i got out of the hospital and started going to the mental health clinic they recommended for me and they diagnosed me with borderline personality disorder with psychotic nos. i didn’t feel this diagnosis defined me but regardless the meds helped me. i have been recently rediagnosed with schizoaffective disorder with ptsd but this isnt the first time i had this diagnosis.

I’ve done some research on this, it is really hard to find anything concrete, but from what I read…

STPD is generally considered a ‘light’ version of SZ.

STPD Delusions are infrequent, might only ever be present comorbid with substance abuse or extreme stress, and don’t tend to last for months/years like SZ can. The STPD delusions might tend to have identifiable triggers, or at least you would have enough insight to better identify any triggers. Also in my experience STPD delusions are more easily changed from one thing to another, and can sometimes be successfully challenged, and I think that is either a lot harder or in some cases practically impossible with SZ. Also with SZ the delusions tend to show up even in the absence of stress.

STPD tend towards ‘ideas of reference’ where you misinterpret something or think you know someone is talking about you or watching you, whilst SZ is characterized by a more extreme version with ‘delusions of reference’ where you think inanimate objects, song lyrics, and tv shows are talking to you.

STPD Voices are less likely to converse with each other, or to address you directly, while SZ voices do whatever the ■■■■ they want.

STPD Hallucinations tend to be less ‘real’ so you’re unlikely to see bunny rabbits hopping around, but might see warping or colour distortions, spiders, glitches etc.

I hope this is helpful? Also I hope it is not horribly inaccurate
