What does it mean if your social security number was found on the dark web?

I have a Discover credit card and I just got 14 emails from them in half an hour saying my social security number was found on the dark web. Do I really need to file a fraud report and check my credit report? Anyone have experience with this?

Are those emails really from Discover?

IDK, I’m not sure, I have my doubts.

Yeah, if you got 14 emails from them, I’d be dubious.

Call them up but use their official number on their website, not anything from the emails.

Sounds like a scam.

You gotta be careful online. It’s important not to over share personal information.

Yeah could very well be a scam @77nick77

Like @everhopeful said, call Discovers official telephone number and ask.

Do not call the numbers from the email

How much are they selling your social security number for in the dark web? I have a friend who just crossed the border and he could use one right now.

I saw in the news there was a huge security breach the other day. Like one of the biggest in history I think.

Edit
Might have been fake news idk I can’t find the article now

There’s a website where you can check if your email has been compromised

absolutely. I bet this gets moderated. so I object preemptively.
I had my computer hacked any times over the past 6 years, and twice they have published all my passwords on the dark web. I know what this means, but I also know that despite my concerns about people’s safety, I should not express the meaning of this in plain terms.

I see no harm, and considerable good, in reporting what has transpired to your local authorities. I know for a fact that there are individuals and cohorts in the community who persecute and “pick on” people who are vulnerable having an ssd diagnosis.

(I would be happy to debate the importance of truth over and above conservative ethics, when it comes to matters of being able to warn people about keeping safe, by reporting the exact substantiated facts as they occurred (in my case).
