What are the chances of recovery from Schizophrenia?

What are chances of recovery from schizophrenia. Hoping to make complete recovery. What is the prognosis?

They said 30 percent will recover, another 30 will improve.

Is that negative symptoms as well as positive? What happens to the other 40%?

I believe that if functioning is the goal, as opposed to recovery, the prognosis is better and the outcome is the same. Working at functioning, doing more even with symptoms, makes for a better life.

Some people have different definitions of recovery. For some it means simply being free of positive symptoms.

I find negative symptoms worse than positives.

10% will suicide. 15% are not better stay in hospital. 25 % are better but need help. 50 % are improved to the point that they can work and live alone.

Do you know how to make a poll in the website for above data to see if it is accurate. If other members know know to do it please make one for me.

That is very true. The worst thing is the med might stop working and you will still relapse while you are on med. the med itself also very disabling. Make it very difficult to work while on med.

I still had negatives even when not on meds.

It is part of the disease unfortunately. They are trying med for negative symptoms but didn’t approve. I am sure they will have one in the future.

I hope so. Do people sometimes make recovery without meds? Recovery from the negatives I mean.

Do you have voice or delusion? If you do, you need med for sure. Once your positive symptoms are gone, your negative will reduce too.

The chances depend on what your definition of recovery is. If its symptom free, then it will be lower; but if it’s being able to function at a normal level, then I think it’s much higher. If I go by my definition of recovery is, then I’m almost there. Its definitely possible to improve with schizophrenia.

Have you ever had negative symptoms?

No voices or delusions. Some negatives but they’ve got better. But still there a bit. Lack of focus drive find day to day tasks hard.

Yes, very severe ones at that. But they got better through antidepressants and abilify. Now, I’m doing much better with negative symptoms. I still, though, have lack of speech/emotion.

Maybe you just depressed. Try antidepressant to see if it help.

I don’t know if it’s bad enough to get meds.

Try to do more exercise.
