Are you anywhere near a university? Sometimes they have book stores on or near campuses, you might want to try a google search for old books in your area I did and came up with a bunch of family owned or smaller bookstores (other than barns & noble) Or you can try Yellowpages.com

I love Abebooks! Most of the books I read were published a long time ago and older prints sell for under 5$. The experience of reading an old book is very important to me. I prefer to buy books used for that reason, the price is another. I think the only time I buy anything new is if it just came out and is something I really want.

I’ve been lucky that our library tries to buy new books… so I can check it out before I have to buy it.

I’m sad to admit that I have done “library days” at Barnes and Noble. The things I browse and don’t buy are because I don’t really want them. I did find one thing I really wanted, the library didn’t have it but I put in a request and they bought it for their collection and I was the first to check it out. I do a lot of reading online. Most of the stuff I read is either old stuff I can find used or so current/tech related that it has to be read in a magazine or on the internet because it changes before it can be printed. Our local used book store accepts books for trade. I have a credit right now but I don’t know what I need so I’m waiting to use it.

amazon.com. Hands down the best used book store on the planet if you can’t get to The Phoenix in SLO. I browse regularly. (Non-celebrity endorsement.)
