I think I’ve spent like over a 100$ already this month on books. I go through a lot of used bookstores though, and online stores. So I try to find them cheap.
But I am reading interesting, and what I call “quality” books. Lots of philosophy, classics etc. By my bedside I have Candide by Voltaire, Things Fall Apart, and a bunch of other classics.
Do you ever find that you also spend too much money on books?
@everhopeful that’s smart of you. Do you find that helps keep your brain active?
My attention span is weird. It can be very fickle. I go through periods where I read everyday, and it can be something like Nietzche, something very heavy and philosophical.
And other days I am intimidated to read a kid’s book or a novella.
I’m kind of like @everhopeful in that it doesn’t matter if I take them out of the library or buy them, I still can’t get past the first 20 or 30 pages. Even magazines, especially girly ones (i.e. men’s interest and porn), lol!
Yes, it’s better than nothing. I was a bookworm all my life, so it was a bit of a blow not being able to read.
The other option is amazon’s Audible, but I’m too tight to pay the monthly subscription, and probably don’t have the bandwidth to download audio books anyway as I don’t have wifi/broadband. I use my phone for everything.
I’ve been finding a lot of high quality books dirt cheap at the Salvation Army. I found a “Complete Works of Jane Austen” in hardback for $2.00 in the Salvation Army. I also found a "Complete Works of William Shakespeare for $3.00 there. I also found Dante’s “Inferno” and “Divine Comedy” for less than $1.00 a piece. I’ve found lots of others, too - “All the King’s Men” by Robert Penn Warren, “The Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison, and so on. All for less than $1.00 a piece. Check out the thrift stores. You can find lots of books dirt cheap there.
Yes. The library here sometimes sells great books dirt cheap. One time I found an uncensored edition of “Sons and Lovers” by D.H. Lawerence there. I thought I had made a monumental discovery, finding an uncensored version of “Sons and Lovers”, but it turned out that uncensored versions of that work had been coming out for decades. I read the uncensored version, and it seemed like it read differently from the censored version, but I had read that censored version a long time ago, so I didn’t have fresh memories to compare it to.
According to Mr Turtle, there’s no such thing as spending too much on books. He has amassed quite the library.
I’m not allowed to touch them because I am a grub! so one morning while he was still sleeping, I turned all his books upside down on one of his bookshelves.
He has started buying through an online shop called thrift books. Check them out! He loves them.
I use Google Rewards and buy most of my books through the play store with what I make. I don’t get the opportunity to read that much anymore. Not that I’d have the concentration to pay much attention anyways.
We all have different budgets and interests, so it’s possible to spend too much money on books. It may be a good idea to write a monthly budget so that you can determine the maximum amount of money you can spend on books per month.
