Went to the Mayo Clinic

So, I flew to the Mayo Clinic on Monday. I had an appointment on Tuesday. The reason I was sent to the Mayo Clinic was because a local psychiatrist didn’t think I fit the diagnosis for schizoaffective disorder and also because I have so many neurological symptoms.

Hubby and I talked to the Mayo Clinic doctor for about 2 hours. At the end, he basically confirmed that I really do have schizoaffective - bipolar type, and he explained why. He also confirmed that I have 2 movement disorders, likely caused by the AP’s, starting with Invega Sustenna, back in 2019. So, I have both tardive dyskinesia and cervical dystonia. I guess I’m just lucky.

Anyway, it was a good visit. Really helped to clear some things up. And we got to hang out with my aunt, who lives in Rochester, MN.

Just wanted to give an update, because a few of you wanted to know how it went. :elephant: :sunflower:

I’m glad they figured it out. Is there anything that can be done about the TD? About the cervical dystonia?

I’m glad to hear that they were able to confirm your diagnosis and hopefully they gave you a strategy to use going forward.

Good you feel like you got some clarity and that you got to see your aunt.

My only real option is Clozapine, because it has a low risk of movement disorders. The doctor thinks it might help reduce the movement disorders that I have, but they likely wouldn’t completely go away. The other side effects of Clozapine scare the crap out of me, though. So, I’m not really sure what to do.

I read after asking you that there are treatments for both problems. Medication for TD, and medication, physical therapy, and sometimes even surgery as a last resort for your cervical problem. Want me to post links to the info?

Yes, please! Thank you!

I currently get botox injections in my neck, shoulder, and back, for the dystonia. Definitely helps, but not as much as I would like. I’m not on any treatment specifically for the dyskinesia.

@Blossom , this is a link for cervical dystonia:

Here is a link about Tardive Dyskinesia:

They should’ve injected you with Benadryl. When I had Dystonia, the Benadryl injection instantly cured.

I have tardive dyskinesia. I have a tremor in my left hand and I take propronolol three times a day. It works for me.

There is no cure for cervical dystonia. In some people, signs and symptoms may disappear without treatment, but recurrence is common.

Oh, my mistake. No cure for Cervical Dystonia. I guess I just had regular Dystonia or Dystonic reaction.

I would still ask about Benadryl injection. The Dystonic reaction I had was an allergic reaction to Abilify 10mg.
