I have a Concern

In the parking lot tonight on the way to my car I had a moment of Tardive Dyskinesia.

What should I do? What steps should I take?

I’m going to call my doctor tomorrow. I might switch to Ablilfy. I might get off medication completely, but I don’t think I can as my uncle’s sz is non healing. I also can’t fracking read without it!

Thanks in advance.

When you say you had a moment, what happened, and for how long?

My tongue went outside from the left side of my mouth to the right side of my mouth. It lasted for 3 eighth notes.

I wouldn’t worry about it too much. But definitely bring it up with your psychiatrist. I had a dystonic movement once, and I thought it was TD. Turned out it was just a dystonia.

Ok. Thank you. :rose:

only 18% of its not a permanent illness. tarditive dystonia is a not too different from dyskinesia really but acute dystonia is slightly different and can go away after a year. the diseases supposedly progress meaning even after you stop a year goes by and it can get worse over the course of a year after you stop meds. only clozapine doesnt cause it but clozapine will whipe out your white blood vessels and drain the blood to your intestines. stick out your tounge in the mirror, if it goes to the left or right on its own you probably have dystonia or dyskinesia

It’s not going to the left or to the right, but it is moving. It’s wiggling a little. I had my mom stick hers out to compare and hers was perfectly still.

A little wiggle is ok. Take it up with your psychiatrist. You may just need some Cogentin, as wiggling can just be EPS. Don’t fret, 99% chance you’re fine. Don’t buy into the hysteria. Keep an eye on it.

i second telling your prescribing physician. you can always have a neurological assessment to see where you are with it and work with both psychiatrist and neurologist to address if needed. i would hesitate to jump to concluding it’s tardive dyskinesia without more input though.

i have EPS problems and have taken cogentin (currently, too), propranolol, and artane at various times with success, so if your other medication is working, sometimes getting something added can stave off and/or manage motor problems.

@igor Gotcha! I’ll keep from fretting.

@etre I will wait.

Thank you both. :smile: I feel better about this now.

My son gets this a little when he first gets his injection. He takes cogentin when this happens and it disappears in a day or two.

i get dystonic reactions in my left thigh muscle. it’s a nightmare. i take orphenadrine for it. it’s only going to get worse because i’m going back on depixol on friday :frowning:

When stuff like this happens to me… I’d like to say I write it down, keep an eye on it and talk to my doc and not worked up.

That would be the calm rational approach…

but in reality… I know I get worked up… especially walking alone at night, then any little tick or twitch feels huge to me because I’m already amped up… then I panic and that makes it worst… which makes me panic more… which makes my muscles tighten and twitch… which makes me panic more… on and on… round and round.

But I would say, make a note… talk to the doc and pay gentle attention to this. Please don’t panic about this like I would.

I keep getting dystonia in my right foot. It keeps curling under like a claw or the monkey’s paw.

@SurprisedJ

I’m not. I’ve got too much on my plate and Mymathlab is being slow.

I’m writing it down in my calendar near my next appointment, so I’ll remember to bring it up.

I think along with the Risperdal ADD I get a little ADD from my Dad. Work and school just compound it, because they compete with: Facebook, Benedict Cumberbatch, the boy (he’s 30) next door (who won’t admit that I exist, but I have to have someone to daydream about), this forum, and local plays. It will bubble up for me occasionally, so I’ll have to just tell it to, “move along” like the rest of my frightening thoughts.
