Weight loss tips

Anybody have any success losing weight on Atypicals. My diet is pretty good with the exception of one night a week where I go out and usually eat whatever I want. I would like to shed about 20 lbs.
How do you do it ? Diet? Exercise? Any luck with metformin, or topamax? Please share some experiences with weight loss.

the answer is in your question…diet and exercise

I have been losing weight by going on walks. I walk my dog and listen to music. That way it’s not just exercise.

I’ve lost 44lb this year on abilify. I’m seeing a dietician. I think that’s the key if you’re serious. Just get your doctor to hook you up with a dietician. That’s what I did.

How about metformin or topamax? Any experience with those?

I take metformin and it has definitely decreased my appetite.

I’m losing weight on aripiprazole as well, but, I walk a lot and do Pilates.

When I was on olanzapine, I ate like a monster.

Tip: the app MyFitnessPal helps me a lot in having control of what I eat.

I lost a little bit of weight on Topamax, but it degraded my muscles too, to the point where I needed physical therapy just to be able to support my own weight. It also gave me the shakes really badly. It was completely not worth it for me.

Thanks @Ninjastar. I’ll try to avoid that one. It’s too bad that it did that to you. I guess there’s no perfect med.

Thanks @brugluiz. I’m looking for that app now.

I think there is a fundamental flaw in your belief that a drug will totally solve all of your problems. Medication is an important piece in the recovery puzzle, but it’s not the only piece. Therapy, exercise, a consistent routine, and a balanced diet are also vital. If you punt all your hope in medicine alone, you will never achieve recovery.

I understand what you’re saying. I have bad OCD and body dysmorphic disorder. I used to be an athlete and took very good care of myself. We all know that the medications for sz are have some unbareable side effects. Weight gain and loss of libido to name two. The flattening of ones affect is no bargain either. I’m angry that I have to take these meds. That is why I post about new ones coming out because I believe that if they created better meds than we would all be a lot happier and Healthier.
But you are right my belief system is screwed up and I am definitely in therapy for it

I’m trying really hard to lose weight, I used to burn calories like nobody’s business, now on 2 aps I’ve found I’ve gained 35lbs. I’m doing alot of running (alot for me) but by many serious runners’ standards it isn’t much, just 20 miles a week. I’ve found that it makes me actually put on fat and that is very discouraging. I’m alot slower at my current weight too, like I’m trying to run while carrying a 30lb backpack or something. I’m starting to combine my running with intermittent fasting, hopefully I can lose some weight and recover faster from those long runs with the extra weight pounding my joints.

I remembered another tip: have a cheat day.

Be careful you don’t get injured. I was running once on Invega and kicked a rock almost fell on my face. The meds alter your sense of balance. It can be a catastrophe.

I basically get injured every time I run since my joints are too small to handle my weight. I’m also really really slow, I thought that would make the impact forces less but I guess it doesn’t.

Could you go swimming instead? I started swimming because I have knee problems. It is much easier on the joints. The downside is you have to find a place with a pool and pay a membership fee.

-work out min 30 minutes at least 5 days a week
-watch portion sizes
-no fried or fatty foods

Basically losing weight requires a ton of self-discipline and self-control. Neither of which I possess

I would like to swim @Ninjastar. I have the membership to a gym that ha a pool but I’ve become somewhat of an agoraphobe since my last episode. If I could get over that then I would be great!
