"Virtue signaling"

All four mods are fighting here!

It’s merely a heated discussion. And I’m quite enjoying it!

Go on then :grimacing:

Oh, we have a cure. It begets the question: Is an unethical action that prevents far greater unethical actions (untold suffering by tens of billions of people) … ethical?

p.s. @Twang - you up to discussing Kant’s Second Critque ???

That’s good, but accusing someone of only saying something to make themselves look good (virtue signalling) is shaming. And setting up an implied false dichotomy between speech and action, particularly in a conversation about the value of stating your opinion on social matters, has the same (unintentional?) effect.

You’re referring to seniors freezing to death in Great Britain because they can no longer afford both heating and groceries? And the windmills that don’t produce power at the right times of day? Windmills built out of coked steel (coal) and that need rare Earth elements, the harvesting of which that have led to environmental devastation across large swaths of Asia?

I don’t quite follow that one

Link battle, eh?

The implication is that if you’re talking about something in one sphere, you’re not acting on it in another. So if you really cared, you wouldn’t say anything about it. Instead, you’d spend the same amount of time here but spend it talking about potatoes.

I could go further and point out that it’s frequently used as a tactic by people who don’t talk OR act to cast doubt upon and silence those who do talk (and may or may not act). I don’t think it’s fair to imply that people making that argument necessarily aren’t acting. The whole point is, we don’t know.

It’s not perfect, but it’s getting there. At least they’re doing something, and learning from it. And a lot of other things are happening, the ozone hole is closing, so something must be working.

It’s the wrong thing, but it’s something. Yay. (Not.)

The most efficient, sensible form of power generation is still nuclear. That’s the direction we should be heading in.

Agreed, just don’t see that implication being made in this thread but I haven’t followed it from the start really…

Actually…

If you’re shaming back then it’s karma.

Dude, there is no silencing you. I have no worries on that account whatsoever.

At last, RECOGNITION!

Seriously, isn’t it nice that we can have a debate without having to belittle each other? I miss grown up conversations here.

I love talking to you for exactly that reason. It’s a workout, it makes me examine my own beliefs because I know you’ll catch the flaws in them if I don’t do it first, and I know we’ll both get up and dust ourselves off after it’s done until it’s time to go again :smile_cat:

The video goes to 2013. Would be nice to be able to get the actual data and stick it in a spreadsheet.

I think i took too much sugar and it ate my brain and now I can’t make an argument.
