My brother in law got disability 3 years ago for mental illness. As soon as he was awarded disability, he announced he was happily retired and stopped receiving any treatment for his issues.
Disability contacted him and asked when his last appointment was and he admitted he hadn’t seen a dr in 2 years.
They set him up for a telehealth appointment with one of their drs. During the phone call he asked if he could do it later because his apartment flooded. They said ok but didn’t reschedule.
I’m assuming he’ll lose his disability and I’m also concerned he’ll be charged with fraud. If he loses it, we have to care for him, but we can’t afford to. His parents are dead.
We’ve already told him we can’t. But my husband says he can’t let his brother become homeless. My argument is that if we try to take care of him, we’d all be homeless
Sounds to me like it was mental illness that drove his decision to not seek any treatment.
I always authorize my mom to speak for me in everything. I can’t imagine stopping treatment since I’m gonna be sick the rest of my life. I need those meds.
Is it too late for him to seek treatment now and be in the clear somehow? This is a lot of money he’s giving up, that is probably sorely needed.
He does too. But you can’t tell unless you get to know him. Since his dad died a year ago, this was his first time in his life he’s taken care of himself. He’s 54! He just mooches off people all the time and asks people he knows to do everything for him
Oh I just read it more carefully, he already told them he hasn’t seen anybody for a couple years. That’s a real bummer. I can’t believe he decided to do that, very surprising, especially considering how many people fight to be approved in the first place. I wish you guys the best though hopefully his burden doesn’t become your burden. Also sad to hear about his dad, that’s rough.
Yeah. My husbands mom died over 20 years ago too. So sad.
I think my brother in law is mentally ill but in ways that are only noticeable to people around him regularly. We explained to him when he first got it that he needs to continue treatment but he didn’t believe us because he had total and permanent disability. That’s what we have and we get reviewed every few years. He just wouldn’t listen
