Use of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids as Augmentation Therapy in Treatment-Resistant Schizophrenia

To the Editor: Fish oil supplements containing omega-3 fatty acids are among the most commonly used nutraceuticals,1 and while their role as augmentation therapy has been studied in schizophrenia, their benefits are not as clear in treatment-resistant cases. We present a case report of a treatment-resistant patient with schizophrenia who achieved remission with omega-3 fatty acid supplementation.

The problem with “a case report” is that it’s basically an anecdote. Unfortunately actual studies aren’t as supportive.

I take a lot of omega 3, around 2400 to 3000 mg of epa and dha combined. It seems to help my mood, but I don’t know if it helps my SZ or not. It’s not hurting me and it keeps my mood healthy so I like it. I’m mainly taking it to keep inflammation down and help my heart but it’s also good for the brain so that helps.

I take Omega 3 in the form of fish oil capsules three times daily. It helps my mood definitely, also my brain. But, I don’t know if it does anything for sz.

flaxseed has 2,500 mg of omega 3 per 2 tablespoons I add a tablespoon to my breakfast every morning I used to make muffins out of it using 4 tablespoons so that would be like 5 g of omega 3
