Can i be on two antipsychotics at the same time?
I’m on latuda and i want to add geodon at night
This is called poly-drugging. I’m not sure about the latuda/geoden combo, but certainly it is allowed in the rules of psychiatry. Yeah you can be on two anti-psychotics at once.
@sleepybug look up the two first! google their names and interactions
If I would have done that I would have the known the two prescribed to me should never have been taken together.
It shows Significant - so not to bad just doctor must monitor closely- mine had Major and said never to use together.
Luras_idone_ zipras_idone_
I think i heard someone say before that ‘apines’ go well with ‘idones’ so risperidone ziprasidone and lurasidone should combine with clozapine quetiapine and olanzapine asenapine ideally if u want the drugs to compliment each other.
i was on saphris and loxapine at the same time
I take seroquel and amisulpride at the same time and it works really well.
I have Seroquel and Abilify.
I’ve taken a combination of Geodon and Seroquel for years. It’s always worked well for me. Some people find Seroquel too sedating, but I’ve never had that problem.
I called my pharmacist and she said there is no interaction whatsoever so i guess it’s a good idea to take both. I will talk to my doc next week
Geodon is twice a day i think. Thats how i used to do it when i was on geodon…
Remember w/aps you want the lowest effective dose. The advantage w/polypharmacy is that 2 diff meds can work synergistically.
They can also double the chance of Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) if they interact against each other or increase the effect to an extreme. Always best to check for the drug interactions before just accepting polydrugging, as not all pdocs check this first.
The pdoc said it was ok… Where did you hear those 2 meds increase eps when taken together? Can you give a citation?
Not those two meds, Polypharmacy with ap’s in general.
Ap’s should always be checked for interaction before just taking two different together. I learned that the hard way and have permanent TD from polydrugging two ap’s that had a major interaction.
[quote]ziprasidone lurasidone
Applies to: Geodon (ziprasidone), Latuda (lurasidone)
MONITOR: Agents with anticholinergic properties (e.g., sedating antihistamines; antispasmodics; neuroleptics; phenothiazines; skeletal muscle relaxants; tricyclic antidepressants; disopyramide) may have additive effects when used in combination. Excessive parasympatholytic effects may result in paralytic ileus, hyperthermia, heat stroke, and the anticholinergic intoxication syndrome. Peripheral symptoms of intoxication commonly include mydriasis, blurred vision, flushed face, fever, dry skin and mucous membranes, tachycardia, urinary retention, and constipation. Central symptoms may include memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, hallucinations, psychosis, delirium, hyperactivity, twitching or jerking movements, stereotypy, and seizures. Central nervous system-depressant effects may also be additively or synergistically increased when these agents are combined, especially in elderly or debilitated patients. Use of neuroleptics in combination with other neuroleptics or anticholinergic agents may increase the risk of tardive dyskinesia. In addition, some neuroleptics and tricyclic antidepressants may cause prolongation of the QT interval and theoretically, concurrent use of two or more drugs that can cause QT interval prolongation may result in additive effects and increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias including torsade de pointes and sudden death. Thanks for posting that. I think I posted just the link of that up top.
Yes, I was just providing the citation that @eduvigis was looking for.
But so many forum users like @SurprisedJ and @comatose and I are on 2 neuroleptics concurrently. Does that mean we are at risk for td? I feel like the pdocs are smarter than that, they wouldn’t endanger our lives if they knew.
It is trial and err for the pdocs. I am not anti-psychiatry by any means. But even my new pdoc says that my last one was over medicating me and should never have combined the two ap’s. So short answer - No pdocs do not know everything. Always check yourself and confirm what interactions and side effects can occur.
Every study I have read about polydrugging ap’s states it doubles the chances of increases side effects.
