Canadians. Did you hear about the new bill C - 7 now in effect? I am very upset and opposed about this. House of Commons passed a bill expands euthanasia to eventually including people suffering from mental illnesses only. It was passed. If people have a mental illness that is severe and chronic etc and even if MI is their only condition.
CMHA is opposed. also NDP and other parties. But it got passed. I am emotional about this and I am rarely with emotion. How did this happen
It will easily be a substitute for proper supports and effect people who are in poverty, areas with no supports etc etc etc
It makes me think I am not important to my country. For years I would have qualified for and option and may have done it if it was in effect. but I got treatment supports and meds and eventually doing so much better - even though I struggle every day I am important. Things have changed. I hung in there ---- I don’t know how — but I am glad I did hang in there. I just needed to share this as it is heavy on my heart.

I’m not Canadian but the consequences of this new bill will be very likely felt worldwide. Extending the scope of legal euthanasia to include psychiatric disorders is utterly reprehensible. It’s most likely effect will be to actually increase the likelihood of mentally ill people choosing death not because it’s easier, or they feel more desperate, but because it will be become more ‘prosocial’, and more akin to a rational choice that incorporates and internalises a diminished sense of the value of (crazy) human life.

thats well written. Many media sources are.saying the same thing as you. Why would they pass this when so many people and advocacy groups are outraged. Thanks for replying I am really upset. When I’ve mentioned it people blow it off like what’s the big deal

@lekkerhondje News says the docs will have to offer ‘make aware of option’ if they seem to be possible eligible for assisted suicide. Some docs are saying no way but the fight is whether government can force them / discipline them if they won’t. This is not ok
I don’t think doctors should make people aware if this if visiting. Imagine going into the emergency room and being told you can have assisted euthanasia.
that would be nuts… especially if you feeling bad and then they tell you, then maybe you would chose for it but later on you might feel better again and not want the euthanasia anymore…
@lekkerhondje @SunLion I am chronic and severe and its life long. And for at least 5 or 6 years I thought nothing would ever make my MI bearable again. Well I even told docs that if I didn’t get better I would commit S. If this bill was in effect then, I would have been eligible and that it would have been offered it by the hospital staff. My husband agrees that would have happened. What if I got so severely sick like that again?
Please anyone do know that you are important in life and things change and hang in there. I am glad I did. Even if an illness doesn’t change you can learn new skills and mechanisms and also find new ways to enjoy life
Its not easy to get even if you wanted to, many Drs have to decide and give you permission too.
In some ways but Unfortunately it now is getting easier even in unusual situations
For me it makes me want to try to obtain Canadian citizenship even more so.
If it was an option here I would defo explore it.
I’d be much happier with a death of my choosing then to be in a position where I can’t support myself but also can’t die.
@StarCrazy I’m really sorry to hear you feel that way. I’ve felt that at times in my life and it horrible feeling.
One of the fears is that people would consider dying because there is not enough money, supports and resources and medical care so… people are unable to support themselves. In our society the solution should be more resources and supports, not assisted dying. *You are worthy of more supports, care and resources. More should be available to people with MI. I hope that becomes available for you.🫂
