Are we allowed to talk about euthanasia in other countries?

I know euthanasia for the mentally ill is legal in Europe like Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Its a citizen right.

It was recently done in Canada on a women with dissociative disorder. Her psychiatrist and court accepted that she undergoes euthanasia. There’s still debates about fully allowing it in Canada, its in progress and might be allowed in the future.

Should it be legalized?

Are we allowed to talk about this?

They put down dogs when they’re too sick, so I don’t understand why it’s humane to do it to animals and not people.

I would not expect a mental illness to be grounds.

I think this should be reserved for people near end of life.

I watched my grandad starve to death, and they let an infection kill him in the end

When someone is dying yes to ease their suffering and not drag it out but I don’t think mental illness as reason because you can get better.i did.

I have good quality life now but went through torture to me with voices, delusions etc tormenting me 24/7.

Things got better.

I prayed things would get better and they didn’t immediately but many years later I can laugh again and feel happiness.:two_hearts::slightly_smiling_face:

Yea but not everyone gets better and some are treatment resistant. I think it should only be legalized for severe treatment resistant mental illness.

I will die anyways sooner or later from a heart attack because I can’t exercise or walk outside and I am obese taking meds for high blood pressure and high cholestrol at 30 y.o.

To be honest, this hasn’t come up since I’ve been a mod, so I don’t know if legal euthanasia is a banned topic.

However, our stance on suicide in general is that anyone considering it needs help to overcome those urges and thoughts. I can’t speak for the forum on legal assisted suicide.

I’ll leave this open and a veteran mod can close if I’m wrong in keeping it open.

I was classed as severe treatment resistant and was told I had zero chance of any meaningful recovery. Thank ■■■■ there were no people like you around me suggesting this.

I am not suggesting anything, should it be legalized? At least you got better, I didn’t after 10 years of trying tons of antipsychotics.

It can take years. It’s hard work. You have to be willing to try things to improve. Just sitting around and saying you can’t improve doesn’t help any treatment.

Improvement is meds, therapy, and WORK.

Not because you got better that all people will get better, that’s complete non-sense.

No. Because it has been proven in countries where it is legal that it is abused by those who wish to get rid of the inconveniently ill. No way in hell should it ever be legal for mental illness. Perhaps for ALS or cancer victims.

No way. For psych disorders it’s totally irresponsible as @shutterbug has pointed out. We lose way too many people as it is and saying it’s an option isn’t kind nor reasonable.

People who are mentally ill cannot make clear decisions on suicide. We are not in our right minds when contemplating suicide. Suicidal ideation is a symptom of mental illness and is not a viable treatment option.

Mental illness of all severity can have hope of recovery. With the right treatment anyone can find hope. When you introduce euthanasia, well that’s a permanent and final solution that takes away all hope.

Mental illness is not terminal and should never be viewed as such.

You never know if things will get better.
So, euthanasia is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. In my case, I had severe negatives 2 years ago. Now I have none

I dont get this. If you’re treatment resistant … how can they say you are stable enough to be making those decisions?

I mean say I have treatment resistant psychosis … Will I be in my right frame of mind to be making that decision… ?

How do I stop suicide ideation? I took Wellbutrin and it only made me fantasize about suicide, death and God. My psy said its bad for me stopped it. He said he won’t prescribe me antidepressants anymore.

They do if they only have negative symptoms. That’s my point.

I meant treatment resistant to negative symptoms, not positive symptoms so they’re able to make clear decisions.

@Om_Sadasiva I have them for over 10 years with many meds. How did you stop negative symptoms?

What you don’t seem to get is that negative symptoms can be treated with effort. No one has said it is easy. It’s hard. Very hard. But possible if you put effort into it.

It’s a very good thing that strict restrictions are in place to avoid people just using negative symptoms as an excuse for medically assisted suicide.
