My cardiologist explicity warned me to stop using pre-workout supplements. Apparently many are dangerous and can cause lasting cardiac damage because the ingredients are not what is promised on the packaging and the doses are unsafe.
How about protein powder and creatine?
i drink energy drinks everyday. started taking preworkout a few days ago and it is slightly more energizing but not by much
I would stay away from pre-workouts. If you want extra energy before working out you can have a coffee. Pre-workouts either contain tons of caffeine or some relatively dubious stuff. Probably not entirely safe and the benefit isn’t that great either. I think using low doses of steroids would actually be more sensible.
Creatine is probably fine. But we don’t really know if it has any effect long-term.
It’s mostly just caffeine nowadays.(preworkouts) They used to contain amphetamine not too long ago. Not anymore
Ok stay away from pre workout and creatine… How about protein powder though? haha
Protein powder is good if you’re not getting enough proteins. There are some other substances in some powders that might have a noticeable effect long-term, but we don’t really know enough to say that they definitely work.
But we do have estimates of the optimal range for how much protein your body needs while working out to build muscle and it can be quite a lot (probably depending on how much you work out). So if you work out a lot and don’t eat lots of protein they’re probably worth it. The timing of when you drink it is probably not that relevant but some swear by different timings.
I’ve noticed I get less tired after working out if I drink a protein shake when I get home.
Ok so protein powder is not really neccesary, got it.
Yeah not necessary but I use it because I don’t always get a lot of protein through my diet.
I would sometimes add protein powder to pancake mixes, cakes, and such, to help boost nutrition in students who were very picky eaters.
ive never liked pre workouts, they are all loaded with caffeine, and it’s easy to overdue it and next thing you know you’re up all night. plus i don’t need caffeine to workout.
as for protein powders, i have some whey protein and use it at night before bed, because they are slower digesting proteins for overnight as i sleep.
That is what I was told to stop using. He also said that if I’m eating meat regularly the protein powder is unnecessary and would just be putting additional stress on my liver.
