The very high IQ scores I mention. I’ve done very little of any value with mine. They’re just temporary ego boosters. They’re a way of pretending I’m not a total failure. Any potential I might have had was destroyed long ago. Living with how things are, vs how they could’ve been, isn’t easy.
I can relate. I haven’t taken an IQ test in years because I think if I did again I’d score significantly lower than pre-schizophrenia. I too feel like a waste of potential. Reminding myself that I have an illness does alleviate the thought of being a failure though, at least for myself.
This is always a struggle. I do feel sad for all the people who had their potential wiped out like SZ does.
Mine was due to poor help and support. Mental health professionals thinking that criticism of me as an individual was a good proxy for providing help and support. The negative and unhelpful comments when I failed to do as well at ‘y’ than I’d done at ‘x’. Zero understanding that some of us can be very intelligent and yet have areas where we struggle.
Things have been much better since I moved to Wiltshire in Sep 2017. I can’t fault the mental health team here at all. It’s not their fault that too much damage had been done before I moved here.
Have you seen this article?
This is always an underestimated thing. I totally get where you’re coming from
I still have intelligence in some measure, but it seems to get discounted when they look at your history and DX’s
Yes,I’ve seen that. To put it bluntly EPUT are crap.
It shocked me to be honest, and it made me sad that people have to put up with it.
These trusts have a lot to answer for.
You hear a lot about Southern, but this is the second one I can recollect that has hit the news in a very bad way
Read about how high IQ kids didn’t do as well as adults in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers.
Non IQ related things have more effect on life success. Robert Sternberg said similar thing. Who is a cognitive psychologist. Practical and creative intelligence play bigger role in life success.
Problem with IQ is that it measures a specific kind of intelligence. Analytical. Which doesn’t always help in human world.
Probably the reason for that is a lack of fast tracking.
I was stuck in classes that were boring, and then I found drugs
This is an interesting read. I’ve never been very practical. I was quite creative when younger.
@Joker I am making this statement based on study of Lewis Terman and his Termites. Some of the kids were phenomenal. Terman predicted they will be shaping future. Well these kids were successful but they didn’t “shape future” as Terman thought they would. Some kids who didn’t make the cut of being called genius did well regardless.
@firemonkey I should have said social savviness. Malcolm Gladwell wrote about Chris Langan and J Robert Oppenheimer of Manhattan Project. How former had difficulties in college despite being high IQ due to average social skills. And how Oppenheimer got away with crime he was going to commit thanks to his savviness.
High IQ above certain level is meaningless.
I’ve seen that before, and I kind of fit the profile myself. I came across one guy with a very high IQ who was totally dysfunctional. He had anger problems he couldn’t control.
If you’re smart enough to see what a ■■■■ deal looks like you’d have this
As you can see by my tag line I’m not front of the queue when it comes to common sense. My manual/practical/technical ability is poor. The two online places that have accepted me most are here and the high IQ groups on Facebook. I’m accepted despite my obvious shortcomings.
I had always thought i fitted a 2e profile in light of a crystallised-fluid gap. However recent results on innovative fluid IQ tests have raised serious doubts. I scored at the triple 9 level on them . i don’t do well at 3x3 matrix and mental rotation tests. It’s been pointed out that spatial tests are not the best measure of fluid intelligence.
I would say I’m fairly dysfunctional when it comes to independent living skills. I get a fair amount of support from my (s) daughter and granddaughters.
Does your high i.q. help you deal with the standard bullying that comes when you are different because of mental illness. I find that when I deal with people who are mentally ill but have high i.q.s I am somewhat intimidated.
I’ve had next to no bullying from the general public . That’s because I’ve not interacted much with other people.
I would have a very high IQ if the I stood for idiocy.
