Do a test. Do well. Go into egotistical,at least I’m not certifiably useless at everything, mode. Get scores listed on directories. Join a society because I’ve done well enough to do so. WTF have I done? Imposter syndrome. I’m a fraud. I’m not good enough. I’'m so f*****g useless and stupid.
I wouldn’t even attempt an I.Q. test. But we all have strengths and weaknesses. You’re a smart guy.
I have a lorry load more weaknesses than strengths.
I’m sure we all feel that way sometimes, at least behind the facade.
But you gotta keep it real. You can’t compare yourself with people who don’t have a mental illness and don’t have to take these awful drugs with all their sideeffects. You can’t compare yourself with the championship league when you are playing in league 2 if you know what I’m saying.
And I think most people would understand why we are like we are if they knew where we came from.
It’s probably a form of intellectual masochism to be on a FB group with much younger , uni educated ,PhD types.
I’m sorry you’re feeling bad about yourself. You are intelligent and kind. Stop beating yourself up
I’m sorry but IQ and IQ tests are overrated.
The important thing to note is that I’d have you over for a cuppa if you lived close enough. I also can’t stand dumb people, so that’s a compliment.
There are certainly some people that would agree with you.
This.
Also, my bipolar affects my IQ tests personally. When I was hypomanic, one said I had an IQ of 160+ (bullcrap, btw, if you ask me).
Took another one during a depressive episode and it dropped by like 25, lol.
I went to University, and although there were some nice people there, some of the ‘doctors’ were incredibly rude and entitled.
From what I saw, you’d be better off finding other people to interact with online.
You’re a smart cookie @firemonkey - it’s just not as clear cut when you have MI, as although the intelligence is there, it’s in a complexity that most of these other people would probably crumble under the weight of that on their shoulders.
I know you enjoy these tests and have a keen interest in it. Don’t let the fact your barking mad take away from you as a person
Many great people are a bit nuts. They all try and hide it which is why you don’t know on the face of it
What is the purpose of your obsessive and compulsive efforts to self-assess your intellectual strengths and weaknesses? Very probably to bolster your sense of self worth by rebranding yourself as a “golden underachiever”, a status somewhat intermediate between a “winner” and “loser” as dumb bourgeois society understands and upholds this distinction. The golden underachiever identity might have helped you for a while, but ultimately it relies too heavily on the said distinction to be a good long-term solution. You’re not an imposter or failure, just a guy unfortunate enough to possess a palette of strengths and weaknesses ill-adjusted to this particular period of history.
PD. And yes, you should probably stop testing yourself for a while.
As with any other group they’re a mix of good people, and not so good people. They’ve accepted me more than most other FB groups and internet forums have.
Certainly there’s a psychological element to it. I think you have to be over a certain age to know what it was like being 2e at a time when there was no recognition and support for such a thing. Technically, yes, I’m an underachiever. That’s not surprising given how things were for children and teenagers like myself in the period 1961-1975. Throw in being bullied, and the lack of self esteem and self worth that goes with it,plus years of social rejection as a child/teenager/adult- that’s a sure-fire recipe for insecurity and self doubt.
I think quite a lot people can’t grasp, or choose not to, that however less than perfect things still are they were a damn sight worse for those of my generation.
@firemonkey I know this has come up a few times before and that you’re very sceptical about it, but what about an open university course? Maybe there is some charity that can provide the support you need, even a tutor to help you negotiate the practical side of things. You’ve got the brains, so whatever your misgivings with the right support you could achieve much more than you think.
Theres no need to be the smartest @firemonkey none of us really knows anything anyway
But for what its worth you seem insanely intelligent and well read. I wouldnt worry too much about being the smartest of all time. People only get phds because they devote a ton of time to one topic and get really good at it. So long as you have the capability to learn you can get there too
It’s far less scepticism, I’ve heard of people doing really well thanks to the OU, than it’s a case of severe social anxiety.
Using football clubs ; I’m fully aware that ,on the FB group I go on, I’m current day Arsenal compared to Barcelona , Bayern Munich and Real Madrid level minds. Compared to most of them I’m the dumber part of ‘Dumb and dumber’.
As for the high range tests it pays to be uni educated and preferably very good at Maths/stem type subjects when it comes to verbal tests. You can get quite a lot of questions that are arcane maths/science/tech based questions.
