This sounds ridiculous, but I want to quit meds

Hello,

I’ve been doing really well recently. I’ve been going to work, walking into work, eating healthy, quitting smoking (cutting down first). Any “hallucinations” I’ve been having have been harmless or funny and my “delusions” have faded to background noise.

I want to go off medicine for a while to see how I go. It’s expensive and I’m saving money for an overseas holiday to get married. It’s very vain of me but I have gained eight kilos since starting meds and I want to lose that.

I see my psychiatrist this Friday and I will talk to him about it then.

Thanks for reading.

Turtle!! :fearful: Please don’t go off meds. You’re doing incredibly well at the moment.

It’s possible to lose weight while on meds, I’m losing weight myself.

If you go off meds, you’ll get really bad and might hurt yourself.

You’ve gotten your priorities all wrong.

You come first, not some holiday.

Edit : even if it is to get married.

But perhaps the reason you’re doing so well is because of the meds?

I thought I had my Sz licked on more than one occasion and went off of the drugs, only to be Hospitalized again and again.

Just be careful, is all I’m saying. Talking to your Doctor first about it is a step in the right direction. Don’t go off of your meds without his/her input.

Good luck! :sunny:

Listen buddy, your medicine is what’s giving you the edge maybe…talk with your doctor and see what he says. You have to get the medical approval and program to wean yourself off medicine if it comes to that. Your healthcare provider may disagree and you will have to take your time proving your health to them. I’m still on meds and I’m alot better than years before…I used to drink alot but last night I only had two beers with my family. I’ve learned to deal with the stress like you, but it may have been because of the meds and my willingness to get better…you should think about that and see if you can finance your marriage by working extra hours.

I know your marriage means alot to you, but you want to be on meds probably. Just talk to your doctor and tell them your predicament and how you feel. You may be suprised by the amount of support you get.

Thanks @everhopeful @Patrick and @neveragain you have given me a lot to think about.

I agree, your meds are what’s helping you to feel that way. I feel pretty good lately except for the last voice but I know its because of my meds. please I know meds are a pain but they have a purpose in your life.

HEy and if you’re serious you’re going to be more hyper-can’t sleep and more parinoia when you first get off meds…it’s because your body chemistry is changing. You have to plan to be highly active to preoccupy your mind from having a psychotic break and falling on your face.

You know if they support it you could do it if you really want. But it’s going to be hard transitioning off your meds buddy, extra hard on you. You may even feel sick from withdrawl symptoms, because they’re drugs.

Turtle, you could jeopardise everything by coming off meds. Really don’t do it. It’s akin to Russian roulette.

Maybe I can just talk to my psychiatrist about lowering my dosage or something then.

NO! It’s working. Don’t mess with success.

OK, what are the issues :

  1. Weight gain. this can be dealt with. I’m seeing a dietician, and I’ve been losing weight constantly for the last year. Ask your doctor to hook you up with a dietician.

  2. Cost. Are you on the generic version of your meds? But whatever they’re costing you have to remember they’re priority number 1, and everything else has to be worked around them.

I wouldn’t be saying this only I can see how dramatically better you are recently. I was going to mention that to you but thought you might be insulted.

I’ve seen a lot of people try that. It has rarely worked. It’s never worked for me.

I think you are talking me out of it. Thank you for being so invested. I am doing a whole lot better recently.

My psychiatrist said, last time I asked, that I have to be on meds for life. But I feel so much better.

And also, I miss some “hallucinations” like bear and shadow man. But I guess I risk inviting back the bad and frightening ones if I go off meds right?

I’m eating really healthy at the moment, and actually eating more than I ever have and I lost 900 grams and 2cm around my waist last week. I just think I could lose more, quickly, if it weren’t for the meds.

There’s no generic brand of invega available in Australia.

Don’t do it,it will be more expensive in the long run. Try a cheap med like Haldol it has no weight gain effect.

That’s nice you’re doing well but listen to our pals, don’t quit your meds.

I’d love to quit my meds too, but I can’t because I know that my brain will suffer damage.

I think I should listen to the advice I have been given here but I will still talk to my psychiatrist about it.

I’m sure you are smart enough to know the risks. But good luck and it’s smart of you to run it by your doctor and to not just do it on your own. The danger that I see in this decision is what if you relapse in another country? Maybe you should check out the psychiatric care in the country you’re going to just to play it safe.

I tried life without meds last year. It started out okay, I was able to go back to college and was living on my own even lost a good amount of weight. But I started having symptoms again after about 10 months. Things started going downhill after that. Everyone is different and maybe you’d do well without meds but speaking from personal experience, I wouldn’t recommend it. Good luck turtle! I hope things turn out well for you whatever you choose to do.

I hadn’t thought about the possibility of relapse in another country. Thanks @77nick77 that’s good advice.

I also want to quit meds but now I will think twice after reading everyone’s advice.

Perhaps keeping it to a minimum effective dosage (after you discuss it with your psychiatrist), turtle?
