Thinking of offering some extra rent money to parents when COLA kicks in - Poll

I’ve been paying the same amount to parents ever since I got an income back on disability. I lived here rent free before getting ssdi after moving back in post/during psychosis. The cost of living has gone up considerably in recent years and my income is increasing because of it. Seems like maybe I should offer up some of that increase since their costs are increasing too.

They have not asked me for more.

Whats your opinion?

Should I increase my rent payment voluntarily?
  • Yes, it’s only fair to offer more
  • No, if they arent asking, just save as much as you can for the future when they aren’t around

Haha! I hope you’re able to get some shut-eye soon.

In regards to the rent maybe calculate about an extra 50$ or however much that would help your parents with the mortgage, but not kill your budget at the same time.

Thanks for the advice Monte! There is no mortgage though. Their house is paid off.

You could ask them if they think it’s appropriate that you pay a little more, and that you don’t mind. But you also have to make sure you make ends meet.

First of all, I simply must communicate how thrilled I am that you have this living situation that gives you great security, as well as these kind of options now.

I picked other. Because i can see the merits of both.

If it were me, i would continue the same amount of fixed rent. Because the economy will fluctuate over the years, and your situation is long term.

I would keep the rent the same, but jump in sometimes right now when I could afford to. Pick up some of the grocery bill. Or a trip to McDonald’s, which if my memory serves, you have done with your family recently.

I dont think it has to be black or white. This type of thinking is huge for me too, so I totally understand your question. And of course you have to prepare for when they’re not there, that’s just good sense. So keep putting a bit of your extra away for that. Make sure you are doing that. If you can’t manage extra for household expenses now after putting some savings away, there’s your answer. Stay with fixed rent, since they haven’t asked for more anyway.

You’re a good person to contemplate this. Shows you’re caring, and in a clear-headed space symptom wise. Must have some good meds!

(I’ve had insomnia for the last two weeks too. Hence, the reply at 4:56 am)

When I was living at home, I was paying my parents £80 a month

I started getting paid more, so I gave them £120 instead without them even saying anything

They were really happy I made the gesture

However, in these times every penny counts, so might be worth saying you’re thinking of doing it and see what they say?

Do you have a bill or two in your name? If you can afford it, it might be more beneficial for all of you if you were to put the trash or the internet or something in your name. That way, it would build your credit score, and also take a burden off of them.

I think it is fair to offer more. They do not have a mortgage, but they pay taxes on the home and land.

Putting a bill in your name is also a good option as pointed out.

This is an excellent idea!

Nah… save your money for the future when they won’t be there God forbid.

I’m sure this is what they would want for you

it’s your money, follow your heart…you have mentioned that you spend a lot on guitars and stuff so it’s not like you’re in a bind…personally I am going to use the extra money to put towards insulin costs…this is going to level us out.

Yeah, I have internet in my name these days. I also get cell phone, doctors, dentists and similar personal bills.

YOu are right. My credit is probably complete dog doo doo after psychosis and not being able to pay early hospital visits. I had very good credit prior to psychosis  .

But yes, I get a few personal bills.

Thank you.
