Thinking of getting an aquarium with tropical fish

Does anyone here have an aquarium ? I’m thinking of starting one. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

I had a small one when I was a kid.

They require a lot of cleaning!

Yeah I can imagine. That’s the only thing that puts me off.

Someone I used to work with spent a lot of money on his, and he’s part of all sorts of groups and stuff for people who do it as a hobby.

You never know it could end up that way for you to

There are worst things to dwell on, at least it would be a hobby!

Tropical salt water aquariums require even more effort than freshwater. Definitely do your research first!

Thanks for the advice. I will probably watch some YouTube videos on setting one up and maintaining it. Might even see if there is a forum.

I have always wanted one. The cost and the upkeep puts me off of it. I think they make self-sustaining systems now, but they are pricey.

Had fresh water tropical fish as a child. Had the cleaner fish which helped a lot and a decent filtration system. Had it for many years. At first since I was young I received help cleaning it but eventually just did it myself.

Definitely worth a read up on.

I understand that most aquarium enthusiasts suggest that you start out with fresh water first rather than jumping straight into salt water.

It’s a fun hobby though.

We have a freshwater tank, my fiancé is very proud of it. I’ll try to post a picture later, it’s fairly impressive.

He started with a smaller tank about a year ago, and as his enthusiasm has grown he has developed the tank into a planted tank. He uses sodastream bottled to give the water extra c02 to encourage the plant life. We have ottos which help with the algae build up, loaches, mollys, barbs and tetra.

It’s a beautiful hobby and the fish are very relaxing to watch, although you need to do a lot of research. Fiancé recommends the aquariums sub reddit and the forum Ukaps - UK aquatic plant society. Good luck!

Good luck.

I’ve been thinking about even just getting a new betta fish, and I don’t, because I don’t want the little bit of effort that entails.

Fish are a LOT of upkeep. Make sure you’re really committed!

I had a fish tank set up as a teen.
It was difficult to keep it maintained.
My Mother had to help me.

Having a baby, a dog and owning fish might be too much to handle @Qwerty

But you are the best judge

Also I understand that the larger the tank the easier it is to maintain. I had a ten gallon tank and it may have needed to be cleaned twice a month even with a good filtration system.

:grinning:

It’s a 52 gallon tank

They’re not a lot of work.

I’ve been keeping fish for 30 years. Once a week I hook a hose up to my faucet and drain 50% of the water and put new water in. It takes about 20 minutes on my 55 gallon tank.
