Things to do when you are bored - Suggestions Please

Continuing the discussion from Brief thoughts of boredom lead to thinking about suicide:

My problem is sometimes I get bored of working on my website and very quickly a boredom thought appears that says that I don’t want to do anything. Don’t want to watch movies, go out etc… This thought is so strong that that I consider what will happen if I am bored for a longer period of time and that is when I once again think about suicide.

Folks - what do you do when you are bored - to get over the boredom. Lets see if we can generate a good list of suggestions for James.

I like making lists of videos on Youtube of music I like, that makes me feel good, and listening to that music and watching the videos.

I like learning about science - so I also like watching videos on Youtube that are educational and about science.

Add your own ideas.

I, too, am a youtube junkie. I enjoy finding new music on youtube that I may not be otherwise exposed to. Finding things to occupy your mind will help stave off the suicidal thoughts.

When I get bored I roam around Dollar Tree for an hour. :heavy_dollar_sign: :deciduous_tree: Then it’s off to the library to rent a movie. :movie_camera:

Before watching the movie I go to 7-11 for a vanilla coke+ a bag of dill pickle popcorn.

When I’m bored I walk around outside.
Shoot some hoops or go pretend fishing
I live near a beach so I also like to play in the sand and collect shells and interesting rocks, feed the seagulls.

What ever you do stay away from thrift stores during the day. My symptoms get really bad at those places.

example

  • When church volunteers gather around among each other I think they are gossiping about me
  • Feel they stick their noses down on me for being in need of used clothing
  • Atmosphere feels like it’s the year 1945.

I actually got and made this for my hubby when we got my son some. He’s a heavy machine operator

That’s really cool @BarbieBF! My wife likes the architectural series of LEGOs (Guggenheim, Falling Water, United Nations building), and the revered Taj Mahal (we are saving for that one).

They sound cool. I was surprised at how expensive they have become.

I should probably say what I like to do, aside from watching Youtube. I love sitting down and thumbing through my vast music library and playing songs I haven’t listened to in a while. I also try to handle my pet reptiles if they’re in the mood to be handled and not being bitey. I LOVE cruising around Newegg.com and seeing what the latest developments are in computer technology and hardware. I haven’t built a computer for myself in about 18 months. Thing is, when I built it, I bought the extreme top of the line stuff, and it’s STILL top-notch almost 2 years later. Cost me a small fortune though. I find that working on the computer trying to learn more and more about video editing is fun. I also study encryption technology. I do this on a Linux machine. The only Microsoft product in this house is my wife’s laptop.

The Taj Mahal is considered a legendary piece. It runs about $1500 last I checked. It’s kind of a pipe dream hoping to buy that. Think of how better we could spend money. We’re not exactly rich.

Doing puzzles can be fun if you have the space to do them.

Have a set of small hand weights at home (I am not talking MortimerMouse size weights here!). Do three or four sets of different exercises, either for your arms or legs. It boosts your mood incredibly.

Draw or paint. It’s a good hobby for men and women. There are lots of online drawing courses. There’s a new website called Craftsy with some great course with interaction with other students and teachers. There are other hobby courses too.

Plan your shopping and meals for the next week. Look up nice recipes on the Internet and YouTube.

See the board “Activities to decrease schizophrenia symptoms”. Tons of good ideas there.
