They aren't gentle with white guys

I know of three white guys besides myself who have been beaten by the police - one so badly he suffered medical complications from it years later. Of course, they’re killing black guys. I understand that when the police stop you it isn’t a suggestion, but some of the police actions are way out of proportion to the nature of the transgression. I saw this film of this black guy who didn’t want to give the police this can of tea that he was drinking. The policeman put the guy in a choke hold and forced him face down on the pavement. That is out of proportion to the transgression. The best way for the police to handle that would be to give the guy a fine for not cooperating. People like their pocketbooks, and they would learn not to resist the police. The police need to learn to mete out proportionate punishment.

Yeah this is a problem. Probably always has been. It’s getting more attention these days.

Their has always been a debate about the use of force. Cops need to be effective while still respecting the individuals health.

The problem to me is that in the moment a human can irrationally decide to do drastic things.

There should be consequences. Keep people in check.

I think the world would be better if everyone was outfitted with a video camera. Recording all they see. It would be off the network but when they needed to reference it it would be there.

Doctoring video is still a long and costly project. The end product isn’t that great either.

Police should at least have these. To either justify their acts or to catch them when they are out of line.

Who knows?..

They’re starting to do that. There are cameras all over the place, and they often catch these kinds of incidents. I think there are plans to place cameras on policemen. You’re right. We do want the police to be effective. If I had to chose between the gang members and the police, I would choose the police. The police have more checks on their behavior. Many gangs will beat you within an inch of your life just for fun. However, I saw a film clip of a policeman yanking an elderly woman out of a pickup by her arm because she was being insolent. Old people are fragile. That was a case where a fine would be more appropriate.

I personally think that every cop - even traffic cops, should wear body cameras whenever they are on duty - this would prevent a lot of the violent stuff that is going on.
Not all cops are bad - but there are a lot of incompetent cops also, this is a problem.

Better, more involved neighborhood policing needs to happen, and better training.
We need quality police officers on our streets - I must admit, I do get a bit paranoid whenever I see a cop car - but its probably due to my paranoia/ I am a law abiding citizen - always have been

Rightly or wrongly, the police will tolerate almost no challenges to their authority. Maybe it has to be that way. Nevertheless, I would like to see them work more on proportionate responses to people who challenge them.

If you cooperate and arent doing anything wrong theyre totally reasonable.

Even if you are doing something wrong and you cooperate it can have profound effects.

I got a dui dropped once. They still busted me for the weed though lol…

I was taught as a young child, never to challenge a cop - but yes they, the cops need to respond proportionately when some idiot challenges them for no reason. I do agree

There’s a Gilbert and Sullivan song “Let the Punishment Fit the Crime”. It’s comic but to the point.

Yeah or that guy who was selling illegal cigarettes and they flipping strangled him to death. In the video he wasn’t attacking them or anything they just jumped him.

I think that whenever police officers kill or seriously injure someone who was not violent at the time, the police department they belong to should have to pay a huge fine in damages to the family.

Maybe if you attach monetary value to lives they’ll be harsher on their officers for doing things like this. It’s HIGHLY depressing that you would have to attach money to life to make it valuable in their eyes, but if it works to help save people from unnecessary force, do it I say.

Also don’t know if anyone saw this, but they are using unnecessary force even on animals. First they broke into the wrong guy’s apartment on a 911 call, and then when the guy’s dog walked up to greet them (a service dog, so it was very social, one of the officers was petting it) the officer who wasn’t petting it shot the dog in the head when it came toward him.

The guy lost his best friend and the dog that had helped him for over a decade, and also helped with therapy of children with special needs. There were no retributions given to the officer who killed the dog unnecessarily, even though literally the other officer witnessed that the dog was friendly. Unbelievable. Cops these days are getting away with more murders than anyone.

The worst they did to me was to tell me to get in the car. What was I going top do? Run away?

If you show absolutely no resistance to them they can be reasonable, but some of the things they do can be hard not to resist. It is not a natural act for them to make you lay down face first on the ground. It is natural to want to rebel against that. Of course, I always got face down on the ground, even though it did hurt my pride. When they tell you to get down it is not a suggestion, but I wonder if they have to do that so often.
