The energy bill situation

My daughter has spent nearly an hour trying to sort things out re the huge electricity charges I’ve had with Utilita. I’m now over £1200 in debt! This month’s bill was nearly £300! This is for a flat that is less than 85 square metres

My daughter lives in a 3 bedroom house, and her energy bill was less than mine. There is absolutely no way that that should be so. They were planning to increase the DD so I was paying over £75 a week for this small property.

My daughter stressed I was vulnerable and that no way could I afford to pay over £300 DD. Last I heard before she had to go to work was that they could reduce to £260.

She’s asked for the property to be checked by an electrician ,because no way,no how should my bills be that high! That can’t be done till the 30th June. I’m relatively lucky, how about those pensioners/vulnerable people without the support I have.

I’m of the belief that should anyone die on account of all this ultra greedy price gouging- then corporate manslaughter charges should swiftly follow that.

My daughter was still trying to sort things out as she left for work.

I agree with you @firemonkey . It shouldn’t be this way , but people are going a bit crazy with prices. Please try to remain calm and focus on your health and loved ones.

My bill for a 1 bedroom flat is £64+80= £144pm for gas and electricity.

I never pay by direct debit as I prefer to pay for actual use. DD is a money investment scam by the suppliers so they profit in investments from the money automatically paid to them.

They always claim you can save £30-50 a year or so by paying by DD. I have always doubted that this is the case.

Even so since the cost of living crisis my bills have more than doubled. I doubt it will ever come down.

In your case you should be able to see what electrictiy is being used by selectively testing the use of each appliance and looking at the handy console they provide. In this way you can see what is using the most electricity. So turn everything off and still see if elec is being used.

I am in the US, but my energy bill was less than that for a 3000sqft home in a northern climate for the whole winter!

It’s an absolute joke

I hope you can get through this

With the costs I did not have the heating on until I ended up with damp and mould in my apartment

My main appliances- cooker, laptop, TV,microwave, kettle, washing machine. I have a shower almost everyday. There is no bath. Whichever way you slice it and dice it I shouldn’t be paying more for energy than my daughter.

My mom got her final bill of the year a couple of weeks ago. She had to top-up her monthly payments with 5000€. They also suggested she would pre-pay 900€/month for the next year.

Luckily prices have come down a bit recently.

Absolutely, the price is too high. What I am suggesting is to identify the usage. You can then see if someone else is hijacking your electricity. First thing first, identify all the power usage.

For example, what type of heating are you using? All elec 3 bar fires for example? How often was it on over Winter? Turn everything off and work it out!

If you are not willing to put in the effort then what progress can you ever make?

I am in Canada and paying much less.

Now that I’m out and about more, my average electricity bill is about $8-10 CDN less than in the first months of moving into my apartment.
