The Christian Afterlife

Correct me if this is wrong please…

When we die the Bible teaches we either suffer a second death of

eternal torment in a lake of fire, OR go to live in a city called The

New Jerusalem where we will live with good faithful Christian

people, sometimes in a garden of Eden setting where the Tree of

Life is, and sometimes working the land without tiring or having

any pain or death.

This is my understanding - is that right?

If you believe all that is written in the bible: yes!

Thank God that I am not a Christian, I do not believe in any afterlife.I believe only this our little life of ours that we have here once on the earth. However I believe that we can not cause our destiny to happen, we are not so intelligent.

As I am getting older - not old yet  been thinking of an afterlife, or what happens to us after we die.
I dont know what to believe, but I am inclined not to believe in a Biblical version of an Afterlife.
I am kind of leaning towards Reincarnation to an extent - this is always on my mind

I do believe that I have live before. One time I am pretty sure of is Celtic/Roman Britain. I got wonderful images of this a child. I don’t yet know about any other time periods. I do know the most important time is THE PRESENT NOW. Afterlife or reincarnation, past lifetimes is not as important as how we live this life each day. I was a little hesitant about my belief in reincarnation after my sister passed from this life. I guess that I was selfish. I did not want her being born into another life or think of her as anything as what she was to me in this life. I still know that we lived many lives together in past lifetimes before this one. I don’t know if she has been born into another life. I don’t think so. I believe that our destiny is another life together at a future time. I also don’t know about being born as different sexes, or the same sex, or astrological signs, etc. I also do not believe the garbage that if you did something in the last lifetime; you have been reborn to learn that lesson or whatever. I think the Hindus believe that. So, I really don’t mean to say garbage as we all have a right to believe what seems best for us. I do think that we are alive in all our lifetimes to just be and take pleasure in the universe. I guess that I have not figured out this suffering we seem to all have go through in life. Some of us it seems more than others. So many have tried to explain it; Buddha, Jesus Christ, others. But, truly is there any explanation at all. It just is too.

Living with devout Christians for eternity? That lake of fire is sounding better all the time.

i dont really care what happens to me after death but i think it would be nice to see my friends and family somehow rather than nothing at all.

thats what i think anyway, maybe i am just an optimist now though lol

i don’t think we should be talking about religion, it raises unrest and paranoia in some of the people here… I’m sorry, I am Mormon, but some don’t believe in this and I am thinking of them, because it causes angernand fear.

Hmm I just happened to be reading this:

We believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will take back with Jesus those who have died believing in him. What we are teaching you now is the Lord’s teaching: we who are alive on the day the Lord comes will not go ahead of those who have died. There will be the shout of command, the archangel’s voice, the sound of God’s trumpet, and the Lord himself will come down from heaven. Those who have died believing in Christ will rise to life first; then we who are living at that time will be gathered up along with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. (‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭4‬:‭14-17‬ GNBDK)

Well humans are not perfect. That’s why we ask God for forgiveness for our sins and try to do better next time.

Be careful, you may get what you choose.

Heaven is a mystery to me. I want to be surprised.

Yeah, like the five minutes it took me to get rid of the JWs last week. Freaks me the hell out when my doorbell rings without warning. Don’t like it. Also don’t like that they doubled back after and shoved a Watchtower in my door while I was in the shower, either.

i find a god that desires worship from his subjects or creations, (above all other or false idols) for want of a better term to be as falible as we are. we were supposedly created in god’s image…is that just skin deep or is he jealous, possessive, spiteful, vindictive, vengeful, war mongering, deceitful, vain? as we can be and often are. why would you create such a monstrous species in the first place? yes we can be compassionate, caring, selfless, courageous, giving but this god seems to be all of the above so must be a very complex character…unfortunately though he must be a peadophile and incestuous as he only created two people to start the human race…do the math people and as he is supposedly omnipotent he knew what had to happen to breed the human race…which means he both created peadophilea and incest and knew it was happening as it happened. personally i’d like to get the ■■■■■■■ into court for thousands of years of child abuse but guess that’s never gonna happen right? afterlife at god’s side…yu can shove that where the sun don’t shine…i don’t know about you but peadophiles and rapists and murderers aren’t exactly people i’d like at my dinner table let alone spend an eternity with. i’d study them but they wouldn’t exactly be my friend let alone my idol. something is very wrong with this god if this is his creation, very wrong indeed. for all we know god may well be just a deranged bloody scientist or software engineer that wants to hold us back in our development…i dunno…all i know is this god fellow is heinous to me…and anyway if i were born in iran i’d be a muslim, born in india a hindu or seikh, born in tibet a buhddist…who to say who’s right or wrong? according to medeival scholars the earth was flat and now if you look at the holographic principle they may well have been right. a 2dimensional universe with holographic 3d imagery…flatland all over again and the nly way that god or god’s fit into this picture is by being light engineers (lazers)…show me the door, i’d like to see what’s on the outside beause this worldview ain’t doing it for me. keep your gods and follow the scientific principles. that’s my take on it…

i’ve completely not really answered the original question but hey, this stuff gives me a bee in my bonnet…that is all

LOL …seriously though, what is your perception of devout Christians? If it’s those who proclaim Christ but their deeds deny him, don’t worry. The money hungry mega church, the warmongers, the judgers, those who will not help the poor, the strict legalistic fundamentalists…all proclaim Christ but do not live as Christ taught…
Jesus even said,

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Matthew 7:21 - 23

Now as far as the lake of fire and suffering through all eternity, if you do a thorough study on this, only the body and soul ever ‘goes to hell.’ but the spirit returns to God who gave us the spirit… We are a 3 part being, body, soul and spirit…soul being the consciousness or mind, which would basically include memory and who we are on this earth. the spirit is closely related but eternal.

Matthew 10;28
fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell"

2 thessalonians 5:23
I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ

Ecclesistes 12:7 (At death)
Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

Also, while the Bible does depict a suffering in hell, at some point hell is cast into the lake of fire.

Revelation 20;14
And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

It says the devil and beast will be tormented in the lake of fire but these are eternal spirit beings…when it talks about peoples souls cast into the lake of fire it says it is the second death…some people interpret this to mean they are simply consumed and are no more…

Still a frightening scenario…I would rather my spirit, soul, and body be preserved…

I’ve been reading about near death experiences, and some people report going to some kind of holy city. Most of them report seeing some kind of being made of light. They experience bliss, and they say that words like extraordinary, awesome, or blissful are inadequate to describe what they experience. It seems like there are a lot more hellish near death experiences on the internet these days, and I can’t help but wonder if the fundamentalist Christians haven’t flooded the internet with these kinds of experiences because they have to use the fear of hell to control their congregations. Until recently there were a lot more euphoric near death experiences than hellish ones - about ninety per cent.

Thanks for the clarification on this @e_lunaseer. I had been through a couple of “studies” on this and had forgotten some of the points you mentioned.

My wife has pointed out, and I think rightfully, that a lot of people who don’t know the bible are “afraid” of God.

That is true, or else they just deny Gods existence. What is sad is that often it is the actions of people claiming to be Christian who turn them off too. I know I felt that way when i was younger because of the way i was confronted, often threatened with hell, but when it came down to it it seemed they only wanted me to convert to have a conversion trophy, and were not interested in follow up or helping in any way.
It stinks when you are homeless and ask for some simple thing, a few dollars or food, or a place to spend a night and they tell you “Just pray and we will pray for you” but never lifted a finger to help.

James 2

If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

I should say not all were this way, there were a very few who seemed genuine and these are the ones i remembered when i did come to know Jesus…

Folks,

We really prefer people avoid the religious discussions here because so many people with schizophrenia have religious delusions - which frequently are not helpful to people.

Thanks.

Sorry to bring that up again. As we used to say, “This question has been answered.”

I meant to get more of a book discussion of Bible contents but I can see that it very easily gets off topic and into comparative religion and personal experiences.

Next time, it’s “When in doubt, leave it out.”
