I think it’s a virus in my case. Wouldn’t it be weird and odd and sad if a common virus combined with what we know caused all sorts of pain, sorroy, and agony? I think a virus could cause psychosis.
Agreed, but sometimes I still find myself hung up on how others around the world experience this illness.
I’m a sociology grad, afterall
That makes sense. I’m a former I.T. jockey with Asperger’s. I tend to concentrate on what can be fixed and push aside that which can’t.
Well there’s the theory that toxoplasmosis gondii causes SZ… But who knows the exact root cause
SZ is as biologically-based as normalcy is, no more no less. We allow ourselves to forget such an obvious fact because of the way we interiorise normative discourses. An important consequence follows: It’s logically unsound to infer exculsively from the biological basis of SZ any normative consequence at all. To do so means to incur in the commission of a naturalistic fallacy. (Disclaimer: of course, I’m not denying that biology explains sz in part). It follows, I’d argue, that sz is, in part, socially constructed precisely around the fact that we perceive it as being biologically based. In short, our ‘scientific objectivity’ when looking at sz is heavily permeated by dominant ideology.
Leaving aside the question of how sz might be socially constructed, there are at least 2 ways is which sz is socially shaped (I think there is a distinction between socially ‘constructed’ and ‘shaped’). The first is the example you give above, of how the contents of delusions reflect on the times. The second, would be the impact of social variables such as social class, education, income, residence status, etc.
Same here! :)… Sorry, I meant I did a sociology master’s. My first degree is in something else.
Yes, perhaps that was the wording I was going for.
Demography and SZ is a pretty interesting area of study; I would argue that outcome is most surely affected by factors such as income, education, and social class.
Curious if educational attainment is reflective of the subject matter of positive symptoms.
Personally speaking, my delusions were the standard persucatory ones combined with ones centered around healing the world.
However, those chasing me were people I knew. And I believed I was the symbolic “unicorn”-- healing society of its ills.
Mine were not based in the context of government persecution nor religiosity, yet I still had the same themes that one might have if they believed the CIA was after them, or if they were Jesus.
I attribute this to growing up in a secular household and having worked closely in a governmental setting as a fellow during the prodromal phase.
These are just my experiences, though.
The themes themselves are interesting-- as much as their subject matter might vary, there seems to be commonalities in the actual themes themselves among those suffering from delusions.
This is an extreme example of (in this case purely) socially constructed mental disorder. Things are not nearly as bad with sz (I mean, I believe sz is a real disease) but I think it is a useful warning of our own normative excesses. The article points out that the thesis was widely ridiculed in the northen US. However, nothing is said about it being ridiculed in the south.
Wild to think that such “conditions” can find their way into medical literature.
Let’s not forget the trend of “female hysteria”, either:
Not that it matters or nobody will believe me but I did the ‘math’ or ‘calculations’ and I found out that P(schizophrenia/bipolar | norovirus) comes out with the current numbers of people diagnosed. It’s an estimate with some errors.
Basically, I did the math, found out it works out, threw it away. It’s easy to replicate and do. Requires good high school or some college mathematics and arithmetic. The hardest part if finding the right virus, which I found was (NOROVIRUS AKA WINTER STOMACH BUG).
Basically, you can predict with some accuracy how many people have schizophrenia or bipolar based on it. It comes out spot on.
I think I was given this information while sleeping like part of a disclosure thing or alien thing. I was infected as a child and my DNA was entirely sequenced and I have the norovirus in my dna I was told. Vaxart is coming out with the vaccine which I plan on taking. Only problem would be big banks and big pharma preventing the cure for schizophrenia coming out. I’m about 10-50% confident I’m right right now.
I think I’m one in a billion here so let me know when that Nobel Prize in Medicine comes out and I’m asking for donations of $1 million dollars lol. I might do the calculations again but I don’t know --for fun.
I’m worried about Vaxart Inc, going bankrupt because of Big Banks not wanting cures out. I’m not ignoring all the other things like immune system, genetics, drug use, etc. I just think the ROOT CAUSE is the WINTER BUG AKA NOROVIRUS. It makes sense right now for me. I wouldn’t invest in the company though and wouldn’t take financial advice from me.

My biggest problem was about independent vs dependent variables of how the norovirus and schizophrenia are related and interact. Dunno. That’s why I want to redo the calculation and maybe get back and post it here. I plan on taking the vaccine. A lot of it is based on ‘psychic’ or quantum psychic abilities too.
Like I believe I was sincerely John Titor and that’s a small part on why they told me the cure for schizophrenia. I believe I was given it on purpose by either the government or aliens and MAYBE people are trying to help me or use me to help others. I don’t know.
Look into the History of the Norovirus and the History of schizophrenia. Seems they came out around the same time of industrialization and big capitalism.
Basically, I’m thinking it was some aspect of the good guys in the military that told me this…
a lot of people are suffering. Hey, if I’m right 20 years from now give my family the money lol.
Ok, now that I’ve had my coffee, I think I can hop in without rambling like a mad man.
Current medical theories I subscribe. It’s a genetic error that people carry, like having an extra dial. People can spend an entire life with this dial without it being triggered.
The brain goes through changes, there’s been evidence neurogenisis happens until the mid twenties. Due to the genetic dial, misswired neurons, and floods of chemicals; our super brain powers are activated and we become spacemen.
The trigger can vary from person to person, be is abuse, drug use, stress, etc. the dial gets turned up, psychosis spectrum symptoms start to emerge.
The drugs assist in effect by lowering dopamine that our brain signals to release. It’s a patch, but doesn’t address the core reasons.
Some people never dial back down. I myself am stuck at a 2/10 most times, with spikes.
Just my thoughts

Imma have to disagree with you, @anon28145038:
Think back to Joan of Arc, for example. Existed well before the advent of Big Capitalism, and burned at the stake because she had religious visions-- what we might classify today as visual hallucinations.
This might get flagged, but ancient religious texts were also grounds for displays of schizophrenic tendencies.
I strongly believe the evidence is there suggesting that schizophrenia has been with man long before the advent and implementation of a dominant modern economic system.
I wonder when and how schizophrenia started. Did it start in monkeys?
Your dial analogy is pretty cool, @ooorgle ![]()
Hmmmm… fun to think about
“The bananas are talking about me again…”
Its possible that a virus created the first case of sz and then bad genes just got spread without the virus. I really believe this bcz how did genes go bad without a virus? Viruses can change genes for the worse or for the better. Darwin etc
For some reason, I want to say I read an article years ago that hypothesized that it emerged along side vocal languages. As we started to talk, the change in the brain gave way to the disease.
Only a theory though.
It’s not just a theory because most positive symptoms can only be identified through language.
Maybe then also non homo sapiens individuals had schizophrenia?
