Suggestion for medications I can try?

I’m on zyprexa for 3 years.
I have tried

  • abilify (didn’t work, got psychotic in middle of switch),
  • latuda (got anxiety).
  • risperdal I have tried but not really given it a shot fully because I read that its worst for prolactin so I went off

I dont have much choice because I am limited to what is available in the public health system. I would say identify the 5 (or more) things that you want from your AP and consult your pdoc. For me if I could choose I would look for

  1. the least amount of side effects
  2. newness, I am willing to experiment with something that is new and promising
  3. something that helps with negatives
  4. something that is easy to withdraw from if needed
  5. something that does not need a high dose to work for me

All good points mainly people should be going to their doctors armed with this kind of infomed checklist and asking for their professional opinions rather anyone else.

It depends on what you want.

I have tried.

  • Zyprexa. Zombie. Sedation. Permanent metabolic changes. Weight gain. Hormonal trouble. Skin response (hyperpigmentation). Horrid withdrawals. Worst medication. Withdrawal felt like stopping an AP and AD and benzo all in one.

  • Abilify. Great for side effects. Except that it made me more psychotic, rather than less.

  • Seroquel. Tried it too shortly. I think it causes the average side effects of antipsychotics. Might try again. If really needed.

  • Haldol. Used the longest. Haldol feels much more specific than the others. It immediately stops psychosis in me. Within hours. Makes it good as a PRN med. I did need to stick to minimal doses (0.5-1mg) or I’d feel like a loveless zombie. I needed to quit because it caused deep vein thrombosis…which supposedly is a very rare side effect. I hated haldol…but I hated the other ones I tried more…so I mostly stuck to this. It didn’t cause as much weight trouble and sedation as Zyprexa.

One AP you could bring up to your doc is Caplyta. There are lots of pdocs who aren’t even familiar with it, as it is pretty new. My pdoc had no idea about it until I mentioned it to him. Then he researched it and said we could give it a shot. It’s a great med for me. Everyone has different reactions to APs unfortunately, so they are all trial and error.

Try asking to do other test for other causes of psychosis, maybe your illness isn’t schizophrenia

You shouldn’t ask anyone in this forum what you should try next as there is just as many drug reactions as people in the world. Just pinpoint what you want from the meds and which side effects you won’t accept to your primary physician. After a trial of two or three drugs I’m sure you will find the perfect fit.

It might be a matter of dose. When i was on 5 mg zyprexa/olanzapine i had little effect compared to 10 mg
