Student loans

So I guess I never got an email or paper sent in the mail to pay back my student loans. I’m like a half a year late on the payments when I checked my credit score. You can only imagine what my score is. I’m screwed. I make the minimal in disability income, and can’t afford to pay them back. My therapist said “I know people that are a million dollars in debt” that was a bit of a crass comment. I’m not other people and this debt is going to ruin me. If I ever wanted low income housing, I can’t even do that! :frowning:

Have you ever applied to have them discharged. Mine were after the first try. I have no money for that as well.

No, I don’t understand any of that lingo when I was looking into it. Very wordy and confusing what do they mean you need a review 5-7 years from now?

You can have someone help you fill them out. I think there is a question asking if you had help. If so, they just need to sign as well.

After mine was discharged based on disability and income, I had a review a few years later to see if it was possible that I was better and could pay them. I wasn’t and they officially closed my file. It is similar to a review from ssdi to see how you are doing. The only stipulation that came with the discharge was that I couldn’t apply for financial aid for 3 years, if I remember correctly.

I’ll ask my case manager I guess, but I have a feeling she will be jelous because she’s young and has to pay back her loans…

It would be unethical for her to act that way. She knows that some people need more help than others. I think you will find out she reacts positively. I had a counselor help me fill out my paperwork and I know she still had student loans. It will be ok.

If your social Security reviews are every 5 to 7 years you can probably get them discharged. Just send in your reward letter.

My mom had $160,000 in student loans discharged for good a week ago. Her primary doctor helped with the paperwork and it was approved based on disability and inability to pay. She lives on her social security retirement and has no pension or any other investments.

I don’t know when I get a review.

It should be in your reward letter when you first got approved.

I think I threw that away

You might have to get social security to send you another one then. That’s a pretty important document.

You can download an award letter from the ssa.gov website.
