Spotify is the poor man's stereo stream

I’ve heard some don’t use it because it doesn’t pay the artists…then why is spotify still around after all that? I think spotify is so good because it only costs eleven dollars a month for premium…audio books…any album or artist you can think of except for a very few artists…like Neil Young, which I’m bitter about…he shouldn’t have done that because he says he’s for the poor man. I feel robbed…haha anyways. spotify is my favorite place for music.

I like Tidal because of the better audio quality. They also pay artists better than Spotify. It’s totally up to artists if they want to put their content with a service or not. I get approached by image stock agencies several times a year and I always tell them to arse off. There’s more money in licensing images directly.

It pays the Big artists but the smaller ones don’t really get a look in.

I still pay for the rights of songs and don’t stream simply because I like all music and encourage those who don’t make the charts or the mainstream.

I grew up on alternative and less popular music. It made a huge difference to my life and I refuse to use streaming platforms even though I get one with amazon.

I used to collect records, cds and tapes. I don’t do physical copies any longer simply because it’s stuff I don’t need to carry around with me even though I do have a little vinyl.

Streaming only helps the huge artists which makes even some bigger bands rely on touring. That is hard for many and look up the figures. You only get 0.00003 cents or so for a song on spotify. They get a lot more if you buy it.

Hey @TheFountainPen are you not a mod any more

Yes. I’m not a mod anymore. I ‘retired’ a week ago. It’s an emotionally challenging job.

I can understand that actually

I could never be a mod, it’s a power that I would not be able to use effectively.

@jukebox, I like Spotify but I’m not wealthy enough to afford it. Anyway I’m now trying to minimise my use of headphones due to fears of hearing loss.

I collect cd’s vinyl and I use Spotify. If I find a record I really like I buy it.

This. Don’t be a cheap ass and buy the stuff you really dig because it helps the artists directly.

Yeah. It’s no different to radio but it’s a different world these days and covid really hit musicians hard. No royalties because not many buy hard copies as much in the digital world and streaming cruels you unless your high rotation rubbish like Taylor.

It’s not unreasonable nor hard to pay $2 a song to a platform like itunes although it locks me into a platform. Still. I heard bandcamp was struggling but there’s avenues out there or should be to reward artists directly.

Streaming makes a lot of money to the company and artists suffer. Even the horrid giants of the previous decades paid more to artists. Led Zeppelin wouldn’t have done what they did without royalties and being feted as gawds on the touring circuit.

dude…I can only afford 11 dollars…if I paid 2 dollars a song I would be penniless…haha

Yeah it’s a choice but I’d rather support artists and art I like. I’m poor as shite but still find ways to pay for music I like. Don’t bark up if someone says otherwise. Streaming hurts artists and that is a fact. If your not paying to see music…which in itself is hard to do because it’s expensive as because of the current landscape…your not adding to it. All’s I’m saying. There’s always a choice where you spend your money even if your broke.

Yeah thats why I declined to do it. Props for trying it out tho man.

You can buy albums digitally for that. All’s I’m saying.

I’m opinionated about it for sure but you always have a choice. I listen to the radio and a particularly good alternative radio station and watch a lot of youtube. I find lots of great music simply from that. Yeah it’s different but you don’t have to buy into the whole streaming thing.

You can still enjoy music and support the industry. I realise it’s tough but it aint no different here.

I use youtube music. Its 12 aussie dollars a month. Its its own app seperate from youtube that works exactly like other music streaming apps as far as i know. Super happy with it. I almost constantly have music playing. Its not just entertainment but blood flow to my heart, sustaining me haha.
I mostly listen to classical music like mozart, rachmaninoff, vivaldi, chopin and liszt. Especially while im reading a book. Goes along so well to it.
Hey @rogueone a question if i may: how do you think that the payment of artists works in a case where i mostly listen to artists who died long ago, sometimes hundreds of years. I know that the music i listen to of those deceased composers is an album or song that more recent pianists and orchestras recorded. Its just based off the sheet music by the original composer. But i mostly stream albums of recordings that were done still decades ago. I guess im a bit spoilt with the vast amount of ancient music i listen to. But its literally one of my favorite things about the age we live in. Having most of the greatest music legends from centurues ago in the palm of my hand an any moment. It used to be mostly exclusive for the upper class of society. And i cant get over how lucky i feel to have it.
Sorry if you didnt want to read that novella lol. But i just love it haha.

Before spotify I used to download all my music from napster or limewire.
I come from the age of pirating so i never bought cds. I think i bought maybe 2 cds ever.

Then youtube came along and I downloaded videos and converted to mp3s. Then i got spotify in like 2015 i think?

Now i just cancelled spotify and switched to youtube premium and use the music app.

My brother got i think 500 bucks from streaming his music through tunecores free account

I found this (it must really add up if Spotify is still around):

Spotify pays $0.003-$0.005 per single stream , but how much Spotify artists make depends on other factors. Listeners can also alter the artists’ streaming payouts based on their subscription tier, location, and how often they play a song. Use an online streaming royalties calculator to estimate how much Spotify and Apple Music pays artists.

Spotify has been my go to for years. 11 bucks is definitely worth it. I’ve been using it for music and podcasts. Saw that they added audiobooks recently which is dope!

The other thing is to buy merch directly from the artists you like.
