I’m a pretty big traditionalist when it comes to the holidays— I like turkey, ham, and all the usual fixings.
My parents, however, aren’t so traditional, aaaand they both don’t like turkey or ham
So, my dad will be making homemade beef and rice-stuffed cabbage rolls for the main course, along with a highly-requested creamed spinach. He might possibly be bringing some brown sugar yams as well.
My mom and I are going to be making mashed potatoes, stuffing, and this salmon appetizer thingie that my grandma used to make back when she was still around.
I’m going to be making my first ever attempt at pumpkin pie— the filling will be homemade, and the crust is from the store.
I’m also gonna find some turkey tenderloin to make for my dog and me, that way he can have a little Thanksgiving and I still get my traditional bird as well .
I actually just bought a jar of sauerkraut yesterday for Thanksgiving. I cook some onion and then add a little soy sauce and sambal oelek (Indonesian hot chili sauce) and then add the sauerkraut.
That sounds really good. We were thinking alike. I am going to go to a place that has authentic Polish stores for the cookies, sauerkraut and pierogis. I’m so excited.
I am Canadian so we had our Thanksgiving some time back. We had roast turkey, stuffing, potatoes, gravy, roasted Brussels, carrots, etc. Pumpkin pie for dessert. I just signed a contract for a new job last night so we are celebrating this weekend, but I have a feeling it will be burgers from A&W. LOL.
Even though agriculture has always been a reason of national pride here, we haven’t adopted Thanksgiving as a holiday, unlike Halloween which is the rage among youngsters.
Traditional food here includes several types of soups and stews, “sarmale”, “mamaliga” and “mici” (look them up if interested).
As for beverages: “țuica” and “palinca”, both distilled from plums or apples, come to mind.
I’ll be going to a couple’s house for Thanksgiving. He’s a pescetarian and she’s gluten-intolerant, so we are having salmon with a quinoa-rice casserole and a pumpkin pie made with coconut milk. It’ll be interesting. On Wednesday, however, my clubhouse will hold a traditional Thanksgiving with turkey and all the standard dishes (plus some eggrolls from the Vietnamese staff). I’m not gonna give myself the Mounjaro this week!
