Should you use coffee if you're Sz and on AP's along with AD's?

I’ve been trying to cut back caffeine. I just finished my second cup, am feeling happy and energetic now. I heard you should avoid caffeine if you’re Sz/SzA.

Caffeine can affect certain APs like clozapine. Here’s an article that goes into more detail

im on olanzapine and zoloft and drink coffee everyday. although on higher doses of zoloft caffeine becomes more intense

Hey @anon54988740

When I was on 40mg of Olanzapine I slept like 12 hours a day and had very little energy or motivation to do anything when I was awake. I don’t know what I would do without coffee back then. I drank on average 10-15 cups a day just to stay awake. It never affected me in a psychotic way or any other negative way, but it can for other people.

I’m no longer on Olanzapine. I’m on Lurasidone and it isn’t sedating at all so now I just have 1 coffee in the morning when I get up and then that is all. If I have too much now I sometimes get anxiety.

I see. I’m on Abilify now, and it’s not affected by caffeine, but the Zyprexa I used to take is.

I had caffeine today and I haven’t had it for a month. I’m a slow metaboliser of coffee so I can’t really drink it , as I feel really bad after a few days.

I do feel really clear headed now though, but I’ll pay for that tomorrow with a caffeine hangover.

I only had 2 spoons of instant at 1pm.

I wish I could drink coffee regularly.

I’m on Abilify also.

I tried drinking it for a long time, but then I realized it exacerbates psychotic behaviour severely in my case. It actually took me a really long time to find that out funny enough. Maybe because I grew up with it. It seems so common in our society to drink it that I didn’t consider the possibility it might be bad for me. Now I might occasionally drink a “toy” coffee once in a while. Like a sachet of cafe latte that has about 15% coffee in it, but any more than that and I’m setting myself up for trouble.

High doses of caffeine are particularly concerning for individuals with schizophrenia; caffeine alters dopaminergic activity at post-synaptic neurons through its actions at adenosine A2A receptors, which may exacerbate positive symptoms, such as delusions and hallucination.

I read somewhere that a test of combining caffeine and antipsychotic medications in a test tube made the AP’s less potent.

I drink caffeine in the morning and always take Invega and Rexulti at night.

I drink alot of caffeine. I really prefer it that way

I drink 3 to 5 coffees a day.

Coffee is bad for me
