Caffeine and Schizophrenia

Are there any studies on caffeine and Schizophrenia? I am so addicted to the stuff and wonder how it affects my brain. I take Haldol and need caffeine to keep me up.

Before I got ill I was addicted to caffeine…dont think I could drink it now. It’s a drug that releases dopamine so makes ppl bit psychotic

caffeine makes me psychotic, I cant take it

I have drank ten cups of coffee a day for forty years. Finally I decided that because of the way I drink coffee it would be easier just to take caffeine pills. It really is a lot more convenient and cheaper. I recently switched back to regular instant coffee, and I’ve realized how much easier it is just to take caffeine pills. I don’t know how caffeine affects my sanity. When I was on Haldol I didn’t really notice any effect from coffee. I’m wondering if my addiction to caffeine isn’t purely psychological now. The other day I forgot to drink my coffee in the morning, and I didn’t realize it until noon. I didn’t feel bad in any way. But I am profoundly addicted to caffeine psychologically.

I’m addicted to caffeine. I haven’t done any for years now, however.

I just drink a lot of diet soft drinks that have caffeine. I have noticed lately that my brain just feels funny as all this caffeine all these years are taking a toll.

I’m addicted to brake fluid, but it doesn’t worry me,
because I can stop at any time.

For those folks late to the auditorium…
Coffee is a must.

My old psychiatrist told me once that when one of her patients with sz drank an energy drink before an exam for energy he had a psychotic break in the middle of class and had to be taken to the hospital.

I drink caffeine all the time and I’m pretty much fine.

I drink caffeinated tea in the morning every day and it doesn’t really seem like it does anything to me.

What’s it supposed to do for you?
I drink coffee in bed, right before going to sleep, just for the taste, because it sure as heck don’t keep me out of bed.

I wonder why so many sz are accustomed to either smoking a ton of cigarettes or drinking cup of coffee after cup of coffee.
I don’t smoke, but I love coffee. I drink about 4-5 cups of it in the morning.
Then, I drink 3-5 cups of yerba mate.
I sometimes drink an energy drink but they make me jittery.
My heart rate was high at the last injection and the nurse told me to drink 3 cups of coffee tops TOPS all day long and I was like I drank that on the way over here this morning, and I still have this large coffee right here.
Can’t live without caffeine. I just can’t take taurine mixed in with my coffee on an empty stomach in the morning with all my pills or it makes me queasy.
It’s 3 am and I’m drinking yerba mate, one of the world’s most caffeinated drinks!

Yerba mate? What the heck is that? A soda like ā€˜Mountain dew?’ A hot beverage like expresso?
Heck anymore I skip to munching on the beans in between cup o joe.

it’s not so much caffeine and sz, but caffeine and antipsychotic medication interactions: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16206866

Also, if you have trouble sleeping, why on earth would you take a drug that keeps you awake?

I drink tea, and occasionally decaf ground coffee, but I manage to get 9-10 hours sleep every night, otherwise I’d give up tea as well.

It’s a green tea common in Argentina and other south american countries…

It tastes pretty good! there’s a special cup to use but I just use my every day tea strainer.

Mmmmm, going to have to google that and see where I can get some, got the water on the stovetop waiting.
Thanks!

Everything in moderation. I drink coffee everyday, and I couldn’t function without it it seems.

In the Psych Hospital they got us off of caffeinated coffee and I was fine.
I drink regular caffeinated coffee out of habit, but honestly I don’t notice a big difference between decaf and regular coffee.
I am starting to dislike the taste of coffee.

Supersensitive 2 Coffee gives me intense stomach pains and wide awaken all night. Caffeinated tea is sometimes ok but only in the morning

I drink coffee everyday with no ill effects. My parents buy the ā€œLiteā€ 1/2-caffeinated kind and if I go to Starbucks I usually drink decaf. Even when I drink regular, full-caffeinated coffee I don’t experience any mental issues, only physical ones, as too much of it upsets my stomach.
