Seroquel....anything I should know?

So as I mentioned briefly before I’m biting my tongue and giving medication a try. I’m still VERY hesitant about it and my therapist/pdoc know this, so it’s on a need-to-take basis and it’s going to be a fairly low dosage.

What have been your guys’ experience with it? Good/bad? They say it will help w my anxiety/paranoia/insomnia, etc.

I ate a lot. A LOT.

So it makes you hungry? Oh poop I don’t wanna deal with weight gain. It’s hard enough dealing with that since I’m in college with endless food everywhere, I’m amazed I’m not obese at this point hahaha.

If you’ve ever had drunken munchies — it’s like that. All the time.

I was taking a lot, though. 600mg.

I take Seroquel at bedtime. It knocks me out. I can’t stay up late without being totally drowsier than usual. I’ve been on it for a few months and have not gained weight. I’m on a diet and actually losing weight.

Huh. Well when I say small dose, I mean I’d be taking a REALLY small dose, probably under or around 100 mg. And I would not be taking it on a regular basis, only during my episodes, which really only happen if I’m under a great deal of stress.

That sounds awful though  That’s why I was so anti-med.

What dosage do you take? If you don’t mind me asking?

200 mg once every night.

I’m on seroquel XR 300mg and my doctors know I only take it as needed too. I gained like 20 pounds when I first started it, but that was when I started antipsychotics in the first place so it wasn’t just seroquel. If I can tell my thinking is about to send me into a panic, which is usually at night, I take it and it helps.

Thanks, I’m not sure which one the doc will prescribe me, as I can’t go in for a couple weeks, but I will make sure to talk with her about it.

First 2 weeks hard start low and increase it gradually. I was comotosed the first 2 weeks. Believe me it does get better. Watch what you eat , keep your weight reasonable.

I’ve been on 800 mg a day for almost ten years, and I had no problem with it. Of course, how people respond to a med. can vary, so it might not be that way for you. I think you need to be aware of what any anti-psych does to you. They all have unpleasant side effects, especially the older “typical” med’s, as opposed to the newer “atypical” med’s.

I slept a lot on Seroquel and it gave me a dry mouth. Otherwise I was ok, I didn’t notice if I picked up weight on it.

I started with 50mg seroquel prolong and it knocked me out for a few weeks, so I wasn´t able to work. Everything turned out to be fine after those few weeks. I gained some weight but this gain was quite positive as I lost a lot due to my symptoms (I litterally forgot to eat a few times per week). Due to several issues related to the illness I´m at 900mg now. 450 in the morning and 450 in the evening. The dose had been increased about every week (plus 50mg per week). I can handle the amount I eat now, so it´s ok. Because of the relatively high amount of medication, I need to let the docs check my blood every 3 months. I´ve been under medical treatment for about one year now.

It is a good medicine. Side effects exist but thats normal for almost every anti psychotic there is on shelf. You can counter weight gain by exercise and craving by self control. all within reach and requires no cognitive strength. Just saying. Good luck

I had a very bad experience with Seroquel and only took a few doses before stopping, After my first dose I became disoriented and I went to the mall and didn’t remember it later, I felt extremely ill mentally and stopped taking it. I’ve heard of some people having a good experience with it but I sure didn’t!

I’ve been prescribed that for sleeping. I am only taking 25mg but it makes me sedated and sleepy. It’s been working good before I would be up pass 3am. Now I can sleep earlier than midnight.

That’s what I’m hoping to get out of it. It sounds like it would be really helpful for my night time paranoia.
