Schizophrenia and dementia

I was talking to a professor of psychiatry who stated cognitive decline and negative symptoms increase risk of dementia. I was doing some reading earlier that late onset schizophrenia increases the risk of dementia.

He also stated that because you have schizophrenia doesn’t necessarily mean you will get dementia.

What are others people’s views on this?

I read anti cholinergics, which many folk with sz take for movement problems, also increase the risk of dementia

Maybe a good idea to take second generation antipsychotics if that is the case.

I asked him if it was the drugs that cause dementia which he ruled out.

I think you are less likely to develop dementia if you exercise both your mind and body, but that’s more of an annecdotal opinion than anything else. I was surprised to learn that my shingles vax I had is associated with lower dementia risk:

I am probably screwed one way or another. I was also diagnosed with Parkinson’s in the last few years.

I’m sorry dood. You’re a strong guy so I believe you have many years left.

It’s more of an irritant than anything else because I like to hand-hold cameras for shooting and I have periods where my hands shake badly. They come and go right now.
