There is evidence linking the two, and evidence that a possibility opens up to developing dementia later on in life if one has schizophrenia. Decades ago Schizophrenia actually used to be called “Dementia Praecox”.

We have a doubled risk for Alzheimer’s. A lot of it might be due to lifestyle, though.

I have read the best way to protect the brain from dementia is learning.

you can learn anything.

I read this one study where people with early onset were ask to play with video games, and computers.

They were all older people and knew nothing of video games/computers.

They were said to keep the dementia at bay longer than their peers.

Those who spend their lives learning are least likely to develope it.

My grandmother has Alzheimer’s. When I saw her three weeks ago, she didn’t recognize me anymore. It’s a very sad illness.

I still haven’t gotten the result. :sob: I think it will come on Tuesday. I hate waiting.

My nana had dementia. The last conversation I had face to face with her she thought I was my mother.

I just went along with it.

Yea, I was just happy to be spending time with her. I didn’t want to disrupt her train of thought.

When you reach a certain age fear of dementia becomes more pronounced :frowning:

I’m pretty sure that schizophrenics are at higher risk than the general population.

I always thought schizophrenia was a mild form of dementia

I can’t afford to worry about dementia
I just try to live a healthy lifestyle and hope for the best but I heard that just because you got schizophrenia doesn’t mean you wrong get dementia

Yes, sz/sza’s can suffer from dementia in their old age. They usually get it earlier than the average Joe/Jane. But, there are things you can actively do to slow down the progression or even halt the progression of dementia. Like:

Eat a nutritious diet
Exercise everyday
Get adequate sleep every night
Meditate twice a day, everyday
Do activities that challenge your mind
Learn something new everyday
Take nootropics
Take your psychotropic meds
Read on a regular basis
Socialize everyday

If you are near retirement or in retirement, it’s probably a good idea to do all of these things.

Don’t worry about it if you’re under 45.

Just take care of yourself, with exercise, fish oil, cognitive and social stimulation.

They’ll figure it out within the next 20 years.

Age is the single greatest risk for Alzheimer’s and dementia.
