Sad because my little fur baby

Who is a 14 year old Shih Tsu is going both deaf and blind,

He only has 1 eye and it has a cataract.

He’s responding to fewer and fewer sounds now too.

I taught him to sit with a hand signal but I still think being deaf and blind is awful.

He can learn new ways to function but still. Life just seems so scary if it’s dark and silent at all times :frowning:

My poor little doggy.

It’s a shame to watch them fall apart like that

My childhood dog had diabetes and cancer

Was very sad when she left us

But remember the life you gave them

I will always have a dog now to give them a good home

He’s still got time left. And that’s a good thing because I’m not ready to let go. Hopefully he stays ok for a couple more years. He can see a little and hear loud sounds so that’s at least something

Cherish the moments with him @LilyoftheValley

I know this is not much consolation but their primary sense is smell, and that’s likely still strong

It’s hard watching our pets age. My childhood cat lived until 21 and needed a footstool to help her hop onto my bed for her last 3 or 4 years.

I love that you did that for her @agent101g . That is so precious

That cat was so human. She ruined all cats for us for the rest of forever. Whenever any of us was sad she’d walk in like clockwork and cuddle with that person.

I’m glad you had her while you did @agent101g

That’s the dog I always wanted. But I can barely take care of myself. Sorry for your puppy.

Yes. My brother’s little pup is deaf and blind. He just stands in front of walls and barks… All day. I feel so bad for him as his disabilities are new to him. I dont think he understands that he isn’t alone. That he is surrounded by people that love him. He gets spooked whenever you go to pet him or pick him up. I can’t imagine living that way. Poor pup. Luckily, he can still smell. They just hold him as much as possible so he can feel that he isn’t alone.

Maybe that would help your pup, does he like to be held?

Yes, @bittercat . Luckily he loves to be held and carried around like a baby.

I’m glad you’re so good to yours. You’re a great person for doing that.

Once his sight is completely gone, I plan to put my hand in front of his nose so he can smell me before I pick him up. That should help not startle him too much. I think anyway.
