Has anyone on here gotten a root canal? Recently? I want to know how bad it will hurt. I have to get 3.
I hate the dentist. The drill sound drives me crazy and the numbing stuff they use never works on me 100% so it always hurts anyways even with just a filling so I am very anxious about the root canals.
The only dental procedure I had that didn’t hurt at all was getting my wisdom teeth removed, they gave me a powerful pain killer beforehand that made me loopy and then knocked me out the rest of the day. But I can’t do something like that because I have work that evening.
I have a good dentist. He’s done root canals on me that hurt but my last one was nearly painless and I was even relaxed. With the new dental technology available nowadays it seems to take less time for procedures and hurts less. When my dentists numbs me I tell him if it is not good enough and he will give me extra Novocaine until I feel adequately numbed.
I’ve had several. The pain really wasn’t bad but the lying back as you are being worked on is a little nerve wracking.
I even had some weird thing like my nerve canal was twistier than normal or something for one of them and had to be worked on by a dude with enough experience to handle that. I still don’t remember having bad pain.
They tried to do mine under local anesthetic, which I’m resistant to. The second attempt was done under general anesthetic. The three weeks between the first, aborted surgery and the second successful one were excruciatingly painful.
I’ve never had a root canal before, but I really hate the sound of the drill too, so here are some suggestions for that: (1) wear ear plugs, (2) listen to really loud music (if you can handle that).
@Anna, I’d suggest lining up a sub for that evening, just in case. I had an aborted root canal where the painkiller didn’t take - I had so much novocaine in my face. I was shook up, symptomatic and startled for the next day.
Most people don’t have trouble with them - I have friends that didn’t realize they were getting a root canal until it was all over. Probably it goes just fine, but I wouldn’t risk leaving your employer in a tight spot if it doesn’t.
I’ve had several root canals. TBH, I’ve never had any pain with any of them. Once the novocain numbed the affected area, I didn’t feel a thing. I do remember my jaw was a little sore afterwards but it was from holding my mouth open for so long during the procedure, not from the root canal itself.
I’ve had 2 root canals done until now, the dentist injected an anesthetic, dunno which substance, and I didn’t feel any pain during the nerve extraction. Hope you have the same good luck, Anna !
My tooth hurt while on an aircraft carrier. The dentist told me I needed a root canal, but they were low on anesthesia and needed it for other purposes. I could have waited four days, but I decided to have the root canal done without anesthesia.
I also think you should line up a sub for work. It will probably be fine, but just in case. I’be had two root canals. One was totally fine, and one was awful. The pain leading up to the procedure was much worse than the procedure itself, though.
Are you a redhead by chance? Redheads are resistant to anesthetics and Novocain for some weird reason.
No I’m blonde. Maybe I will try to reschedule again at the dentists…it’s not ideal to have it the morning before I work anyways…but they couldn’t reschedule it until a long time after and I’m trying to move as quickly as possible
