Risperidone and olazapine

Are these meds simular to each other? In UK its given out a lot and a pdoc I saw said its the best ones

Both are atypicals although from different families.

I would say both are pretty effective but can have lots of side effects.

They are both effective AP’s
Risperidone is used a lot here in the States but newer meds like Abilify and Latuda are lately more and more common.

Olanzapine is a really good Antipsychotic but comes with some pretty intense side effects like massive weight gain and Diabetes.

I personally don’t have s good track record with the newer APs like Abilify and Vraylar.

I do very well with Risperidone

I have been on both. Olanzapine made my blood sugar high, and risperidone made me feel restless.
For reactive psychosis I would say Risperidone is the best antipsychotic. For schizophrenia, there is not a best one.

Yes. Both risperidone and olanzapine are good for covering mixed mood and psychosis, and they hit pretty hard (I took olanzapine, knew a buddy on risperdal), which is good for sleep and agitation (feeling and behaving all over the place, basically).

I would also note that both are good for maintenance of psychosis treatment, or at least olanzapine is supposed to be, while its sister drug, the drug it almost the same as, clozapine, is, and so is ripseridone.

They both hit you pretty hard and have a knack for really nipping short term, really bad psychoses in the bud. I would definitely prefer having the side effect of lactation, which belongs to risperdal, to the side effect of rapid weight gain and diabetes, which belongs to zyprexa (olanzapine). I mean, those are the most striking things that are, for the most part, unique to them, or at least what crosses most clinicians’ minds when they see those drug names.

I would vote risperdal for long term.

Zyprexa has a strong metabolic efffect and a strong effect on prolactin. Risperdal has the stongest effect on prolactin of any of the APs which means you will probably feel like crap taking it. Zyprexa gave me metabolic syndrome so I can’t take it anymore without getting extremely ill, risperdal didn’t do anything for my symptoms but the side effects were horrible.
