Responder quote of Cariprazine (Vraylar/Reagila)

According to https://decisionresourcesgroup.com/drg-blog/schizophrenia-highlights-2018-apa-annual-meeting/, there was reported a responder quote (>= 20% PANSS reduction) of Cariprazine of 84.8% at one year (also in a 20-week study). I read another study where the responder quote was about 30%, so perhaps it is more effective as a long term treatment.

A notable reduction in mean PANSS-FSNS (Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale-Factor Score for Negative Symptoms) score, a negative symptoms efficacy outcome, from baseline was observed early in the treatment (i.e., by week 8) and cariprazine’s efficacy was maintained up to one year of treatment; a mean change in PANSS-FSNS score from baseline of -11.1 and a response rate (defined as ≥ 20% reduction from baseline in PANSS-FSNS) of 84.8% at one year were demonstrated. Similar findings were presented from the post-hoc analysis of the 20-week open-label phase of a relapse prevention study (clinicaltrials.gov, NCT01412060

That’s pretty good. Sounds to me like (taking the jargon out) 84% of the people had a 20% or greater reduction in negative symptoms.

It’s not approved for negative symptoms in the US. But, since it is approved for schizophrenia, doctors could still prescribe it, I think.

That sounds interesting. I am totally terrified of everything medication related, especially medication switches (really: I escaped a ward twice in complete terror because they wanted to switch my meds, escaped to another country even :)). But Vraylar is a med I’m curious about. I’m not sure if it’s available in my country yet, might ask my doctor.

I’ve been on Vraylar for 2 years. I like it. It is the only med that doesn’t cause more negative symptoms or worsen them for me. It doesn’t cure them. Maybe in my case, it reduces them by like 10%. That could mean the difference between laying in bed all day and getting a job in my opinion. I still take supplements for another 10-20% reduction. I’m not cured by any means. I still have negative symptoms and obviously delusional/irrational thoughts.

But at least I’m not in agony anymore. I’m sort of content now.
