I recieved my diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia in 2017. I became homeless and remained so for several of years. I had no contact with my family and I lost many friends. When I read literature and articles about my diagnosis I often feel distress. The statistics talk for itself. I have read that many schizophrenics become addicted to alcohol or drugs and that few have a partner. I long to meet someone, to fall in love and form a close relationship. This hope to meet somone is sometimes the only thing that gives meaning to my days and prevent me to plunge into despare. Anyone who has any thoughts on this? How do you go on when the statistics paint such a gloomy picture?

I’ve been diagnosed since I was 22 years old I am now 32 and have been married to a wonderful man for 4 years now we dated for a year before that relationships are possible with the right person

This was more or less the topic of my very first post on here. The kind words of compassionate strangers gave me hope. So many said they were married, or in a relationship. That they had kids and families and friends and jobs and lives. It gave me hope that I could one day be like them.
Now, I am one of them. I’ve been married for almost 9 years. We have fostered and adopted children together. Yes, we actually managed to adopt. There was a bit of extra paperwork to go over as my therapist had to sign some forms saying I had been in recovery for a long time, and that she approved my decision to adopt. Our kids are grown now (we got them as teenagers already) and living happy lives. It is possible. Now I can tell you that, the way others told me.

I was also open from the get go and promised I wouldn’t lie and be truthful and that he needed to be the same he accepted this and we have had a wonderful relationship he is my rock and my everything we still talk about everything but he is the ONLY person who knows me inside out

I was crushed after my first psychosis and diagnosis..
I never thought I’d have kids or get married…
But here I am, married 5 years now with a toddler.

The stats say I should have died around age 40. I’m 56. I just be me one day at a time and trust things will work out if I put in my best effort.

Don’t trust the statistics, many of the people go under-reported because they aren’t involved with the studies. Have faith things will work out for you, I hope that they do!

Thank you. I forgot to mention that the statistics say few people with Sz hold a job. I hope I will have the level of functioning to work one day. Love and relationships are eaqualy( if not more) important. I feel sad when I think about the social difficulties I have. I hope that I will be abel to maintain new relationships.

I’ve been married for 10.5 years and have been working for a year now. Don’t give up! Take your meds as prescribed, report issues to your psychiatrist, and get into therapy to learn coping skllls.
