I think we have more geniuses percentage wise than general population. Most of us aren’t geniuses though.
I think they’re just reporting the drop in IQ after onset.
“Biosocial factors, such as a high intelligence quotient and high level of premorbid function, have also been associated with an increased risk of suicide in patients with schizophrenia.”
I read less intelligent got psychosis and more intelligent did not
Thats so true, I was high functioning before my 1st psychosis, after psychosis I lost intelligence and became suicidal, nearly killed myself twice, intentional car accident and intentional overdose, both landed me in the emergency.
I think high IQ ppl die more from suicide due to sz because the fact that they lost their intelligence makes them more suicidal.
That makes sense if accompanied by a reasonable degree of insight re how things were pre psychosis, and how things are now.
Now that I take a low dose of ap my brain function is better than before the episode of psychosis. I got better grades after the episode.
That’s pretty interesting ! I’m glad things are working out for you.
I know my intelligence took a hit from psychosis. I’m working on building back my cognitive abilities though and refuse to give up.
When I was doing math and I had 0 motivation id just start with something as simple as 2+2.
Baby steps builds the momentum
I don’t know if its from sz or old age, but I’m forgetting how to spell words. I use to be able to spell anything. Now I just get stuck. I know I use to no how to spell a particular word and for the life of me, I’m dumbfounded.
Know* your right my spelling isnt great anymore either
Back when I was diagnosed with sz ,in 1975, it was like the kiss of living death. Expectations were lowered right down. There was no help to get you doing as well as you could. Things changed when I got my 1st computer(386, Windows3). Even then, in 1996, there was a wealth of stuff from which to get mental stimulation .My wife was not book learned, but, until the dementia, easily did better than me when it came to practical matters.
How much brain power was lost between 1975-1996 is anyone’s guess. What I do know is that there are far more attempts to improve cognition nowadays than there used to be. Cognitive difficulties are seen as the most debilitating part of the illness.
You’re entitled to your own opinions but not to your own facts. There are many studies on this out there and they show the same thing.
@sonXI There will be exceptions to the general rule, but as a whole @anon9798425 is right.
There can be global or non global impairment. In my case Cognifit put these in the red zone, indicating significant impairment.
I think you’re right that you lose a lot of intelligence when you get sick. But the onset of mental illness is higher among highly intelligent people
That’s not a ‘like for like’ comparison .
So is there anything positive about this illness?
