Does anyone take a prescribed stimulant to combat sedation effects of medication or is that something they don’t do (they being the prescribing doc)
It’s something they try not to do,
But it isn’t unheard of.
It’s not recommended to take benzos everyday, but I have to because of my medication.
I think it’s totally worth talking to the pdoc about and hear what they have to think.

I tried getting Adderall and its almost impossible. I took it one time and got paranoid. I have to get my adhd diagnosis before they give it to me. Right now I’m on Strattera for add but its a non stimulant. I tried wellbutrin too. Its not recommended in general and risky, but they sometimes do it. I’ve been trying to get on it for years, but refused to do the add test because they said to quit all caffeine for a week and it’s too hard.
I’m obsessed with Adderall but I think I rather not have it then have it. It might work, it might do nothing, or I could get worse.

I only ask because my olanzapine 5mg isn’t doing anything other than massively sedating me. I was considering a higher dose but can’t afford to be as tired as what it would make me!

Do you mean it isn’t working on your positive symptoms? You could always ask for a different antipsychotic to see what happens.
I’ve tried other aps, but I didn’t like the side effects. There was one last one I could try… the injection one but I don’t like the idea if I don’t get on with it I’m stuck !
If you’re worried about side effects of other APs, maybe you could give a try to an antidepressant that boosts norepinephrine. Effexor and Wellbutrin come to mind. I’m on effexor and I feel very activated and alert throughout the day.

Yes I agree with SeanMac. I used to sleep 10-12 hours a day. When I took Wellbutrin I sleep 7-8. Also it’s not a stimulant medication for ADHD, so it is not as stimulating and not likely to cause psychosis.

I’ve logged a message with my doctor. I recently got discharged from my CPN and consultant. So I feel at a loss of what to do
They want to put me on wellbutrin for supposed add. I thought about it and dont think i have add, because i was fine before abuse started as a kid. I wonder if wellbutrin would counteract the med damage and help me feel less lethargic though…but i dont dare try.

A lot of people want Adderall these days. It’s a scheduled whatever drug. People want it for recreational use and abuse. It’s a risky thing. People sell it too. It also has a high addiction rate among other things. It’s risky or w/e with schizophrenia and not recommend or specifically used for schizophrenia. I can only get it if I’m certified ADHD, which I could be. My doctor is old school. I tried it before with a prescription but my former psychiatrist gave it to me at the height of my paranoia when I thought I was being followed and I was in danger. Worst decision ever.
I was told by a random pharmacist that Adderall could really help if you do have legitimate schizophrenia and that it’s safe. But I feel a psychiatrist might feel it’s too risky to prescribe it or that she/he could potentially lose their license if something happened. I don’t know.
I think I was hoodwinked with my former psychiatrist that promised to give me adderall for years especially short term for mid terms and finals and studying, etc. She reneged on that promise and led me along for years with promises. It hurt and messed with me.
I’ve been asking for years and many doctors either flat out refuse or get angry when you ask for it over and over again.
Same thing with Viagra I guess too.
There’s a lot of safety precautions too like heart issues and age I think.

My pdoc prescribed me modafinil. Modafinil worked but had bad side effect with sinus pressure.
And also tried Ritalin. That almost made me manic, and I had difficulty with speech on it.
I said I didn’t want to try Adderall as I figured that’s just higher risk.
So I stick to coffee/caffeine.
And I do light therapy in the mornings for my sleep issue.
I asked for modafinal and one of my doctors said its for fighter pilots lol. I have no luck or good reason except cognitive decline and negative symptoms.
Wellbutrin made me manic and suicidal, also it did not improve my negative symptoms as the psychiatrist was trying to do. Wellbutrin increases dopamine and can make sz worse, psychosis is a possible side effect of Wellbutrin.
Most of these meds are performance enhancers.
It made me worse and crazier.

I have the type of psychiatrist that will basically prescribe whatever I suggest except she won’t prescribe antidepressants due to mania, so I have to be careful with my own choices.
For the modafinil I told her it can help people with excessive tiredness daytime sleepiness which I had. So she prescribed it without question

Its similar to Wellbutrin, it increases dopamine.
They don’t work for schizophrenia.
